I like the animated cartoons, and it's adventures in the Silver Age ... I have no history of them in the Bronze Age and I find this team very fascinating and more I think about this thread - I should considered some of them in my 50 greatest costumes. I regretted that and I find this Youthful Team very exciting, and they were hip, and I consider them very attractive for many young comic book readers. I see them as Teen Titans on Steroids. or Teen Titans Unlimited.

I had fun reading their adventures too.

Ah, I loved those digest sized Adventure Comics!  Such cute lil comics.  Luckily, I still have them. At the other end of the spectrum, I had the two treasury sized Legion of Super-Heroes comics, including that all-time classic, the wedding of Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl!  My dad had thrown all of my treasury sized comics long ago, but I was able to re-acquire those two a couple of years ago.

I followed the Legion starting with Earthwar, straight through to Magic Wars. I picked up back issues both of Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes and of Adventure (though Adventure was usually out of my price range) and only in the past few years started looking at post-Magic Wars Legion. They each have something positive to bring to the Legion mythos, but the pre-Five Years Later legion is by far my favorite, especially the Levitz stuff!  I hated the art and "costumes" on Five Years Later, and the stories were darker than I'd like, but there was some good stuff, especially Matter Eater Lad. I did enjoy the "Archie Legion", at least the stuff I've read.  The Waid Legion was reasonably well written, but nothing like the real Legion, and so I did not really care for it. If he had started from scratch with some other group than the LOSH, it may have been better received, at least by me.

Somebody mentioned that the Legion of Super-Heroes was a backup feature in Action Comics after it was booted from Adventure Comics and before it was placed in Superboy's comic. That sounds familiar, so I must have heard about this at some point, but I've never seen any of those stories and I've never heard anybody talk about them. I'm assuming it wasn't a great time for the Legion.

I went to the Comic Book Database to get a few basic facts and to look at the covers. The Legion of Super-Heroes appeared in Action Comics from #377 (June 1969) to #392 (September 1970). The covers all show scenes from the Superman stories. Above the masthead for Action Comics, each issue has a blurb that says:

The Legion story in #388 is a reprint from Adventure Comics #302. To give you an idea of what the stories were like, here's the CBD summary of the story from #392: "Princess Projectra and Saturn Girl return from a mission to find they have been replaced by Prince Projectur and Saturn Lad. Why has the Legion forgotten who they are? Mon-El is also sworn in as the new Legion leader." Written by Cary Bates. Art by Win Mortimer and Jack Abel. (Jack Abel inked some of the issues of "Superboy starring the Legion of Super-Heroes" that I have from later in the 1970s.)

Here's the cover to #392. I included it because it has the Super-Sons, and I know some of the people at CCF - including me - love to make fun of the Super-Sons. I had no idea they were ever in Action Comics.



According to CBD, this is Mort Weisinger's last continuous issue as editor. 

Too bad there was no Legion movie. Hugh Jackman was great as Wolverine but I've always felt he's a dead ringer for Timber Wolf. 

I've mentioned a couple of times, probably in some Subscription threads, that after a lot of begging and wheedling my parents bought me a subscription to  Adventure Comics back when the LSH was the main feaure. A couple of months into the Adventure subscription, the LSH was replaced by Supergirl and the Legion was shoved into a few back pages in Action. Man, was I upset! What a waste of a hard-won subscription. 

The move to Action was disastrous IMO. The Legion went from a full-length feature to a back-up slot. Given the much smaller number of pages, only a few characters could be featured in any given story, which made the stories more "intimate"--not a good fit for a big team that was formerly involved in grander sci fi based tales.

 I didn't mind the first such Action story since it starred two of my faves--Light Lass and Timber Wolf (incidentally, in a drug addiction story, 30th century style--two years before Spider-Man's) but the following stories were excruciatingly banal to me. One story had Shrinking Violet going on a date with Matter-Eater Lad. There were some interesting touches-- Shooter wrote that ME Lad was  supporting his parents  (guess he was writing what he himself was going through)--but not enough to compensate for the lack of grandeur and scope that had been a Legion hallmark. I struggled through a few more Action issues,  then lost interest and stopped reading the comic. I've only read the complete Action run in the past few years, courtesy of the Archives--the stories are OK but I really don't think I missed much back then.
