I started The Legion of Super-Heroes Archives Volume 2 today. The first story in it introduces the Legion of Substitute Heroes. I think this is currently my favorite Legion story so far, narrowly beating out the Super Pets story from Volume 1 (though I know there are many many more stories ahead). I am not sure who this artist is, but I like how they draw the characters of varying heights. Polar Boy is particularly short which is visually interesting to me. I wonder if later artists keep this up for his character. I like how Night Girl has an owl insignia on her costume. The first time I was introduced to the Legion of Substitute Heroes was when I found an issue of DC Comics Presents at a yard sale. It also had Ambush Bug in it. I still have the issue somewhere, and I remember it being pretty funny. But I don't know if I remember Night Girl being in it. I googled to look at the cover and sure enough, she is not on the cover, in her place is Color Kid (who is not in the first appearance of the Substitute Heroes). Based on their first appearance, I am debating whether Stone Boy or Chlorophyll Kid is my favorite. Chlorophyll Kid has some top notch expressions in this issue though! Really hits home the feeling of being rejected haha.

This, like so many other Legion stories, is the work of the underrated John Forte, arfetto. I also loved Night Girl’s owl logo, but even more I loved the boulder worn by Stone Boy. Glad you are enjoying the series, one of the most melodramatic and nuanced of the Silver Age.

The Legion of Substitute Heroes is one of the better early stories. Actually, arfetto, it looks like you're getting into the Edmond Hamilton stories, and as far as I'm concerned, he was worlds better than the previous writers, so hopefully you'll enjoy.

Night Girl could have found steady work as a super-night watchman. Or in show business.

I love her mile-high hair Yes, so exciting that the beehive survived until the 30th century. Maybe it's trendy on her home planet?

I am still reading Archives Volume 2. I enjoyed the first appearance of Element Lad from Adventure Comics 307.
I just finished the story from Adventure Comics 308.
This story involves the "resurrection" of Lightning Lad, but in fact this particular Lightning turns out to be...
...Lightning Lass instead. It is a kind of baffling story overall (for one example, it is weird that Lightning Lass decides to sleep in Lightning Lad's crypt to trick the Legion into thinking she is her deceased brother) but I love the alien smuggler's planet the Legion arrives on.
And for me the scene stealer of this issue is...
...the Protean Beast of Antares, or "Proty".
I like how we just see him on Chameleon Boy's shoulder the entire story haha.
So, thanks to Proty and the thieves' planet, I enjoyed the issue - issues with the Lightning Lad/Lass portion notwithstanding.

Just finished reading Jim Shooter's initial run on the Legion. You could definitely tell his attention was divided towards the end, but I still found something special in just about every issue. I've heard he later returned to do a second stint on Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes. Is it worth checking out? If it's nothing too special, I'll jump right to reading The Great Darkness Saga, which I've been looking forward to for a long while now!

If you could get one art commission from any classic Legion artist, living or passed on, who would be the artist and what would be the details of your request?

If you could get one art commission from any classic Legion artist, living or passed on, who would be the artist and what would be the details of your request? Probably a questionable choice for most fans, but I'd go with Jeff Moy. The post-Zero Hour reboot was the first time I really followed the book(s) with any regularity, so those versions are still what first come to mind when I think of the Legion. Something along the lines of this image here would be cool (although I's want Ultra Boy, Andromeda and M'Onel more prominent):
