I remember reading an interview with Cockrum years ago (in "Back Issue" most likely), where he mentions the "markings" on Violet's costume that he designed, are actually a stylized lettering that spells out her code name. but I've never been able to figure that one out. IIRC that was mentioned in an interview with Cockrum and Grell, in Back Issue as you said. Grell remarked that he eventually realized that the "black squiggles" in Vi's bodice (the "squiggles" atop the cleavage area, in other words) were were supposed to be an S and a V, and Cockrum had confirmed that was indeed the original design/intention. I've never really seen that in any Vi images by either artist, though. Hmmm, maybe the v-neck is meant to be the "V." And in the first pic here it almost looks like there is an "S" squiggle near the cuff on one forearm. Anyway, it's a sleek and striking costume and I love how Vi looks in this shade of green. This color obviously provides continuity with her former look (though it's a darker green) and it looks beautiful with her black hair and black tights/accents...but I'm surprised no one thought to give her a, you know, violet (purplish) costume...perhaps a color like Cockrum's Polaris costume.

It's the style of what he was drawing (mullets, thong outfits that make no sense, crazy facial expressions), not so much the artist's art itself, I think. It's what we demanded back then, or what comics creators thought we demanded (or what they wanted us to demand). Yes, but "we" does not include me, since I happily skipped the 90's in terms of comics. Well, it's still better than the LOSH leather jacket phase. The early issues on Legionnaires were done by Chris Sprouse and the art was outstanding.

My memory is being unusually uncooperative on this, but I'm pretty sure this is the first Legion comic I picked up after "officially" starting to collect comics:
I did have one issue earlier that was lost to the sands of time, but I've since replaced:
Along with another sadly lost bit of Legion lore that became one of my holy grails. I was finally able to replace it at a reasonable price a few months ago. It regularly goes for at least $50, often over $100, but I managed to get it in pretty good shape for under $10:
So it's safe to say I've been a fan for a long time. I finally gave up during the "shove it grandpa" reboot, but I hope we'll get a better (closer to the original) incarnation soon. Totally jealous of that zine !

The Comic Book Store that I go to will ship one Archive Book a month starting January 2016 and I should be getting the Complete 13 Volume Set for a low price of $24.00 a month (includes shipping and handling) and I get the 13th book for free. So by end of December 2016 - I should be getting the complete set. More I read this thread - I'm hooked on it and my love for Titans Hunt kind of sparked interest in the Legion of Super Heroes.

My snarky leather jacket comment was referring to Giffen's art (whatever happened to that guy, he used to be good?) in the Five Years Later Legion. Yuck, as far as I am concerned.

One of my favourite Legionnaires, by the great Steve Lightle. Did Lightle change his style over time? I don't know his art that well but this isn't how I picture it. Don't care for the costume change here: the gold insignia is too obtrusive, the hip-boots rarely work for me, and I've always disliked the way they cut the shorts or swim-suits way up over the hips in so many of the modern outfits for the female characters.

Hey it was the only cover with her I could find on GCD, and I did see the Warbird likeness too. Doesn't detract from my enjoyment of his style though.

One of the (many) things I like about the Legion is the depiction of a lot of very strong female characters, not physically per se, but there aren't a lot of wallflowers once you hit the late 70s to early 80s. I loved how the girls would be watching the guys screw up, and collectively roll their eyes. Even dream Girl who became the ultimate vapid clothes horse grew into a shrewd leader. Shady, Phantom Girl, Lightning Lass, and Night Girl quickly became favourites of mine, among others...like Polar Boy, loved the characterisation.
