This assumes, of course, that we're going by published credits, especially when talking about strip artists. Or even things like The Spirit, where they're all signed by Eisner, whether he worked on them or not.

That was a concern for me in making my list. Two creators I would've otherwise included, Alex Raymond and Floyd Gottfredsen, didn't write the strips they drew. It also means no Harvey Pekar.
Cei-U! There's always a catch!

You guys are giving all the answers away. Not even close. Just the obvious mainstream choices

Hell the European and Asian Market of creators alone can fill a list a dozen times over... Just got to think straight, that's all

There's also a ton of underground creators to choose from (Crumb, Shelton, Griffith, Williams, Rodriguez, Wilson, Irons, etc.)
Cei-U! I summon the food for thought!

I have 12 on my list who have not yet been named in this thread, including likely all of my top 5.

I'm at a disadvantage because I have zero exposure to comic strips. Steve Canyon, Prince Valiant are totally unfamiliar to me. I'm probably going to go 80% comics.
Don't worry Shax, Mcfarlane could never make it near any of my favorites list.

You guys are giving all the answers away. Agreed. MRP alone has spoiled about half my list.

Interestingly, if we revisit this topic in the future (which we should!) my list will change massively.
So many great newer creators fall into this category, that I imagine at least half my list will be different in 10 years time.
I will not I'm imposing on myself something slightly stricter than what Cei-U! said. I want the work I am most familiar with of the creator to be in the proper time frame. Even if a creator is eligible because of something they made in the past, if all I know is their work from the last 10 years, I'm leaving them off for now.

So I can't change the stuff if people quoted me, but I did go back and add spoiler tags for those coming to this after this point and will offer apologies if I impinged on the suspense of people's choices. It was just hard for me to fathom people not being able to think of 12 cartoonists worthy of mention, let alone not being able to come up with 12 cartoonists of any sort. My enthusiasm for the topic bubbled over, mea culpa. The thing I love about the 12 days is its a chance for people to talk about the positives of comics and the love for it, rather than a lot of the griping we get in a lot of other threads and I was wallowing in the joy of the topic. -M

I'm in (as always). Time to start working on my list. A few obvious choices for me (some of which people may be able to guess from my previous lists) and some other possibilities I need to narrow down to 12.

Including strips means that they will almost certainly dominate my list. Yep... says I echoing north of the border.

Hmm I'm about halfway done. This second half is going to be the challenge though.
