This is why I do not deal in collecting comics for monetary value. In fact, as long as the comic is held together well enough to read, and any marks aren't on words, then that is awesome enough for me. In fact, the more worn, the better. I want a book that has been loved, touched, read a million and one times, has notes jotted down up top or on the back, and a coffee stain. Whatever. Give it to me so that I can love it, too. Just no gross things on it. Ms CW made the above comment when discussing the perceived monetary worth of comics. So to keep from derailing that thread (You Want How Much?) I thought we could share stories of comics that have their own personalities and appearances. In my case, the two I will share, are buying one with a newspaper article clipped and left in the comic, and a homemade certificate of authenticity. (Cause Ms Jezebel needs to see that one.) But anything that might fit into the category of a copy of a comic being unique physically from all the other printed copies of it; writing, clipped/filled out forms, distribution date stamps, unofficial signings, covers missing, coloring, etc. You are welcome to share those and/or share photos or scans as well. Batman #428 When I bought A Death in the Family, because the 90's convinced me that I couldn't get the full impact of the story reading the TPB I had bought at Six Flags several years before I started heavily into comics, I decided to buy the individual issues. When I got all four, I sat down to read them, and in #428, was a clipped article from the Anchorage Times about the phone line DC set up to decided Jason Todd's fate. I ended up contemplating more about how far this comic had possibly traveled from Alaska, to reach St Louis Missouri for me to buy more than the hate that apparently just enough people had for Jason Todd, to take the time to call in and tip the scales for him to die. The side story of this article being in the comics trumped the importance of the comic itself to me. Marvel Premiere #1 This is a comic that I bought at the second of third convention I went to. I knew I was getting "stuck", for the price the dealer was asking, $25, back in 1995-96, somewhere in there, for what is probably a VF (I'm no grading expert) comic. But I was new to the game, never been good at haggling anyway, and then had more disposable income to burn. So since this was the height of my finding pre-Starlin Warlock issues, I didn't give it much thought. At least he tried to make it seem his book was worth $25 with this homemade certificate of authenticity. Now I can see, he didn't try very hard. I got duped then.  But hey, at least at some point in it's life it was signed by Gil Kane. |

I am working now, but when I have a chance, I will contribute.
I have a seriously good one to add later, but I need to read it first. It was one my son pulled out of the 25 cent bin the other day, and he gave it to me because he did not see the quirky value in it that I do.

Over on the CGC forums, there used to be a whole thread of people posting pictures of their comic books with penises drawn on or in them. I should try and dig that one up...
I personally love it when a comic has some kid's name written on it, or some other notes. One of my big regrets is missing out on a sale once that included an old DC romance comic from the early 70's where some girl had written a whole "Dear John" letter on the back cover. Somewhere in my collection, I have an Archie comic with a note inside from a kid letting their mother know they were going to a neighbor's house for the day; the note is dated, something like October 14, 1978 or something, which is a good two + years after the comic came out. I love that sort of thing.

Most aren't very good, but I have a Batman coloring book from the 1960s where the, ahem, "additions", are quite hysterical. I'll have to dig it out! |

Here's another...I loved old 15 cent covers so when I opened this one...  ...I can see it again...  I collect comics with "certificates of authenticity" but not something that looks like it was produced by an amateur, or a comic book distributor that can't be traced. |

I have a lot of comics with names, doodles, marks, etc. on them. Since I didn't spend more than 2 or 3 bucks on any of them, I don't care. My favorite is an issue of Lois Lane where it looks like the original owner pulled out the center spread, used it to cover a table while he painted a model, then put it back in the book.
I think I mentioned a bunch (well, 3 or 4) 60s DCs I picked up recently where someone used a 3-hole punch on them and razored out or glued together the ad and letters pages as much as possible so they were just story from cover to cover.
I also have a phone-book-thick homemade collection of DC 100-page-spectaculars that someone took the covers from and "bound" into a cover made from a manila folder. Images cut from the original covers were glued to the new cover.
