However, just a month earlier, in Star Wars #74, cover artist Tom Palmer definitely did swipe from the cover of the October 1959 issue of Stag, drawn by Mort Kunstler... Excellent detective work, confessor! I love Palmer's Star Wars work, but there's few who could match the great Mort Kunstler for pure dramatic scene creation. Not my detective work, I'm afraid. It was chaykinstevens who first pointed out Palmer's swipe to me.

Not exactly the 1980s Defenders of the Earth, but... Thor #131 - August, 1966. Cover by Jack Kirby and Vince Colletta. Green Lantern #57 - December, 1967. Cover by Gil Kane and Sid Greene.

I forget the exact issue of Uncanny X-Men this is a homage to which also had Polaris on the cover.

Artist Mike Mayhew did a recreation of it in watercolor.

Saw the Doom Patrol cover and immediately thought of the Bob Hope cover.
