Finished the Firefly series and looking forward to re-watching the movie, which I can't remember anything about. While I really enjoyed the series, I can see why it didn't make much traction with viewers - there's not really an in-series explanation why most of the planets are living with 1800s technology while parts of the rest are flying around in spaceships. Also, the main problem is the order of the episodes - judging from comments on Tv.com, I think I've seen them in the order that Fox re-broadcast them; but if you look at the original series order, it leaps into the middle of the story, doesn't introduce the backstory until much later, and (I'm going to have to check up the episode order to confirm this) but the "Fox order" shows character development all through, whereas the other order seems to have some developments happening out of sequence.
Out of all of this, I think the most amazing part is the bit where Fox does something right.

Due to my digital TV getting some series for free, I relatively recently have started watching Justified. A big Elmore Leonard fan, so I had read the original short story the first episode is based on, I'm now into Season 5 and enjoying a lot what they are doing with the characters. Especially loving Walton Goggins' Boyd Crowder. I also am loving Timothy Olyphant's Raylan Givens' tired looks of annoyance whenever a criminal is about to do something dumb.

Justified is amazing! I discovered it around the 4th season, then went back and watched the rest on Amazon Prime. Boyd is one of those villains you really want to cheer for throughout

Out of all of this, I think the most amazing part is the bit where Fox does something right. If you watched the DVDs, then you should have seen them in the order that they were intended, not how Fox showed them. On my version of the DVD, they have the episodes in the right sequence with the air date underneath, which is: 1. Serenity (Parts 1 & 2) - 12/20/2002 2. The Train Job - 9/20/2002 3. Bushwhacked - 9/27/2002 4. Shindig - 11/1/2002 5. Safe - 11/8/2002 6. Our Mrs. Reynolds - 10/4/2002 7. Jaynestown - 10/18/2002 8. Out of Gas - 10/25/2002 9. Ariel - 11/15/2002 10. War Stories - 12/6/2002 11. Trash - NEVER AIRED 12. The Message - NEVER AIRED 13. Heart of Gold - NEVER AIRED 14. Objects in Space - 12/13/2002 FOX skipped the two-part first episode, as the executives felt it was too slow, and started airing the show with the second episode. What is lost, of course, is the introduction to the characters as well as the reveal of why Simon and River are on the run from the Alliance. They then jump episodes 6 through 8 ahead of episodes 4 & 5, which probably further confused things for weekly viewers, and then they finally showed the first two episodes last once all hope for the series was lost. While I agree with you that the explanation of why the Old West was living side-by-side with spaceships and lasers was missing (or at least lacking), the reason for failure, in my opinion, lies solely with short-sighted FOX management that wanted to make a splash out of the gate rather than let the series mature at its own pace.

Objects in Space - 12/13/2002 That's the order I saw them, which make a lot more sense than the alternate order. TV.com has the original order as (based on the numbering above): 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 4, 5, 9, 10, 14, 1, 13, 11, 12 Based only on the TV.com reviews (as I never saw them at the time) it appeared that the order I listed was the original aired order, and your order is the Fox order. If I have that the wrong way round, that makes more sense to me, as the idea that Fox had done something right was pretty odd.

I should watch Serenity. I should rewatch Firefly!
And Buffy.
And finish watching Angel.
But I'm just not feeling modern stuff right now. I'm watching WKRP in Cincinatti. (It's pretty great.)

This season I've noticed Dave Foley, Will Sasso and Alan Tudyk, all playing hardened criminals.

Never watched Buffy (tiny lie : a friend of mine tried to have me watched the robot episode and it was alright, but if amongst te best of it, not super excited about the series). I'm usualy on top when it comes to series, but sometimes, I skip the more family orientated stuff for lack of time, but after a chance viewing 10 days ago of an early Modern Family episode, I've been bng watching it, now up to middle of fifth season, without even realizing why

If it is the one in Season 1, that can be discounted as growing pains for the series. If it is the one with John Ritter in Season 2, it isn't a bad little stand-alone, but it doesn't really play into the overall mythology. If it is one of the ones in Season 4 with Adam, that is generally thought of as one of the weaker seasons, but it still wasn't bad. If you want to give Buffy a real try, watch the last episode of Season 1, then all of Seasons 2 and 3. Later seasons, like with any longer-running show, are more hit-or-miss, but there are always a few episodes each season that confirm how great the show could be ("Hush", "The Body", and "Once More, With Feeling" are three of the best episodes from Season 4 on).

I didn't watch Buffy when it came out, because I liked the movie and I thought it would just be a lame knock off a-la Look Who's Talking. Silly me: I have mich binging at some point in my future.

How far along in Angel are you? Season 2, but it's been more than 10 years. Season 3 is really good, Season 4 is good, and Season 5 is a completely different show, in my opinion the series' best, that unfortunately did not get a sixth season to appropriately wrap up storylines.
