It depends which robot episode you watched. If it is the one in Season 1, that can be discounted as growing pains for the series. If it is the one with John Ritter in Season 2, it isn't a bad little stand-alone, but it doesn't really play into the overall mythology. If it is one of the ones in Season 4 with Adam, that is generally thought of as one of the weaker seasons, but it still wasn't bad. If you want to give Buffy a real try, watch the last episode of Season 1, then all of Seasons 2 and 3. Later seasons, like with any longer-running show, are more hit-or-miss, but there are always a few episodes each season that confirm how great the show could be ("Hush", "The Body", and "Once More, With Feeling" are three of the best episodes from Season 4 on). There's also the Warren Mears and Buffybot episodes. For a fantasy show, there was quite some cybernetics thrown in. I'd agree with richardbishop's recommendations, but I would also say a word in defence of the first season. It sets up the premise of the show in its purest form, and establishes the main characters. I think both the Season One finale and the Season Two opener pack a lot more emotional punch when you've seen the first season in full. Yes, it's trying to find its voice, and there's some goofy stuff in there, but that kinda adds to its charm.

Season 2, but it's been more than 10 years. Season 3 is really good, Season 4 is good, and Season 5 is a completely different show, in my opinion the series' best, that unfortunately did not get a sixth season to appropriately wrap up storylines. I agree that Season 5 is by far the best of that series. Overall I remeber enjoying Angel much more than Buffy, but I tend to like the themes that Angel dealt with more.

At the time they originally aired, I think I enjoyed them both about the same. As time has passed, I don't find myself going back to Buffy very often, probably because the themes don't resonate with me as they used to (not that I was ever a teenage girl), while I still find Angel to be eminently entertaining every time I watch it.

Curiously, I never got into the comic books of either Buffy or Angel, Season 8 and After the Fall. The premise of either series just didn't pull me in, and especially with Buffy I felt that the show had already strayed too far from its roots by Season 7 (even if that was my gateway season!).
On thr other hand -and this is somewhat off-topic - I was late to the party on PAD's 2006 series of the X-Factor comic, and part of why I ended up absolutely adoring it is that it reminded me of Angel.
