On a related note, I hate every time they put Batman in big bulky armor that limits his movement. It worked in 89 for scrawny Keaton, no need to keep on doing it again and again. I agree to that. He's starting to look overly muscular. Also, no need for nipples on armor

Tobey Maguire's Spider-man costume is pretty faithful to the original design.

Too much CGI, too much shaky cam, the action scenes seemed disorienting. I guess that's what happens when half the characters fly. Also the movie never seemed to slow down. Non stop fight scenes, with a punchline here and there, and countless references to things a casual moviegoer would never understand.

The 1994 film version of The Shadow did a pretty good job of capturing the costume:

My favorite live action adaptations of superhero costumes: 1) Christopher Reeve's Superman costume: In my mind, the Superman costume is so iconic that it should be simple and without embellishment. It's all about the colors and the "S" shield. This one pretty much nails it. I hated the costume from Man of Steel. 2) Iron Man: As others have pointed out, since this is an inherently "real world" design, it didn't really have the problem of "How do we make tights look realistic on the screen". But still, I think the execution of it was great. Certainly I don't think we could have done it justice without modern CGI. 3) Captain America: Specifically, the costumes from Winter Soldier and The First Avenger. While the First Avenger suit was definitely a departure from the comics, I loved how they gave it a practical, military look without going all the way and making you forget that he's still a superhero. 4) Amazing Spider-Man 2 Spidey suit: Spider-Man is another character whose costume you don't really need to mess with. While the ones from the Raimi films were pretty faithful, I give the slight edge to the costume from ASM 2. 5) Batsuit from Arkham Asylum (video game): Okay, so technically this is not a live action adaptation. But I include it on this list because someone actually did make a real version of this suit (see below), and I prefer it to all of the live action suits we've seen so far. While I loved all of the modern Batman movies, and thought that the suits were good for the world the movies were trying to create, I always felt that the all-black armored look was too much of a departure from the comics. The Arkham suit is a great blend of a realistic look balanced with the traditional comic look.

Though I posted the Reeve pic, I *do* wish the cape was longer and maybe heavier. I like regal Superman.

C'mon folks. Tom Tyler's Captain Marvel is still the gold standard for live-action superhero costumes. The single button at the shoulder, the embroidered half-cape with gold braid across the throat, and the regal sash at the waist a la Von Stroheim.
SHAZAM!

The 1994 film version of The Shadow did a pretty good job of capturing the costume: I second this, and it makes me think that they had it right with their super hero films in the early 90's as not only is the Shadow great but as I mentioned earlier so was the Rocketeer and thinking of these two together reminds me that Dick Tracy looked pretty great and the Phantom movie costume was pretty amazing

Non stop fight scenes, with a punchline here and there, and countless references to things a casual moviegoer would never understand. As dupersuper says, most casual moviegoers seem to have liked it just fine -- it was selling out here in Manila four weeks after it came out. I think as longtime fans, we take best guesses as to what casuals would or wouldn't get. I was playing the Fables video game and thought for sure only people who have read the comics would possibly be invested in it, but then I looked at the forums and most of the gamers didn't even seem aware of the comic prior to the game, much less have read it. Right on cue, a friend told me she started playing the game and really liked it, and started asking me about the series. Avengers is my favorite movie of all time. The fight scenes, as they did in Cap 2, meant something - they were true character-building moments. The little smirk on Thor's face when Hulk draws blood, the fact that Cap was winded but kept getting back up, Black Widow being the one to look for a lateral solution to the whole thing. All of it came together. And when I think of the fact that something THAT unwieldy shouldn't have worked on any level, the fact that it continued to sell out theaters here in Manila a month later when most movies don't last two weeks in the theaters just makes it more impressive to me. Plus in the end it was a movie about overcoming your differences and coming together for the common good and doing the right thing. As Agent Coulson said, the world could use a little more old fashion. And I genuinely thought it was beautiful. And awesome.

Also, on topic, I think if old man Gordon is wearing at most a bulletproof vest, the goddamn Batman shouldn't cover himself up with a sack-ton of protection.

While the ones from the Raimi films were pretty faithful, I give the slight edge to the costume from ASM 2. One thing I liked about the Winter Soldier was how the costume just meant something. He's got his SHIELD suit and later on, when he needs a new suit and a message needs to be sent, he goes back to his wartime suit. Even my mom went "Ah, that's the one I know." And the Raimi suits got the design right, but I just get so irked by the silver lines. Irked! To the point of irrationality!!!!

I wish the cape was shorter and I'm not at all a fan of the long and heavy cloak look. Love the way Quitely draws it ending above the knees: To me a shorter cape communicates action.
