Over in Shax's THUNDER Agents thread, we're discussing a bit about character death, and how it was pretty shocking at the time. Clearly, that's not the case now.
So, I'm thinking, what major character HASN'T died (for a bit) from the Big 2?
I think Storm is about as Major as I can come up with for Marvel... maybe Hulk? (not sure about him).
Over in DC...I don't know that Wonder Woman ever died, but I'm not that familiar. Otherwise.... Martian Manhunter?

^Regarding Storm, are the 'deaths' at the end of the X-Men issues of the 'Fall of the Mutants'crossover considered to be 'true deaths'? It's when Forge uses the life essences of the X-Men and Madelyne Pryor to seal away the Adversary. They are subsequently resurrected by Roma.
There was her apparent death at the end of #248 of Uncanny, but that was never meant to stick and she was revealed alive ( and regressed to childhood) seven issues later.
Concerning important X-Men characters, I think neither Beast nor Iceman ever kicked the bucket for an extended run of issues. Even Cyke and Angel had their Apocalypse-related 'deaths' that got resolved fairly quickly. Of the All-New team, Piotr, Banshee, Nighty, Sunfire, and Wolvie each died at some point in the last 15 years or so.

Cyclops is dead now (supposedly) and was gone for a while after 'the twelve' storyline, IIRC. Angel was definitely dead for a while (when we got the replacement one that looked like him but didn't have his brain). I think you're right about Beast and Iceman! That's two at least!

She became the goddess of peace and Hippolyta assumed the role of Wonder Woman. I seem to remember a cover with Wonder Woman in a hospital bed with the JLA around her as she passed. Can't recall how she was brought back to the land of the living.

They even had a funeral with Superman (I think) giving a eulogy saying they were hoping for a resurrection. Even within the comics they weren't taking death seriously.

Hmmm, I don't think Plastic Man ever really died, rihgt? Recently, there was a couple of occasions when he was almost there, but always got a last mn save IIRC...

Is Wolverine still dead? I picked up the issues from a year or so ago when he died and haven't even read them. They are at the bottom of my read list currently as I have heard they were so-so.
Ima pose an add on here...who SHOULD die? And who should have never died?

I realize this section of the board is dedicated more to classic comics, but one character I was upset about dying was Phyla-Vell, the daughter of Mar-Vell at the conclusion of DnA's Guardians of the Galaxy series. I was intrigued with the path Phyla had taken through her Quasar and Martyr identities, and was disappointed to see her story get cut short so unceremoniously. I thought it was a waste.

I totally agree with you and I was very sad to see that happen and I consider it one of the worst decisions by Marvel Comics ever done. I wanted to see more of her too. I was a Mar-Vell fan and this is one of coolest characters that ever created and was gone in an instant.

That's right... I remember now they did the Artemis thing too during the Byrne run... I wasn't sure if she actually died or not though.
I don't think I've read any DCU books between Identity Crisis and the New 52.. good to know about Final Crisis... I guess that does just leave Plastic Man. I'm not sure he counts as a major character, though... has he even been in the New 52 yet?
Wolverine is complicated. The 'real' Wolverine is dead, but there's 'Old Man Logan', who is Wolverine from a timeline where all the other heroes died (I think he killed many of them)... he's around now. The hero formerly known as X-23 is Wolverine now.
I don't remember Phyla-Vell much, other than her death. I do remember wondering where Legacy was... did he die? Or was he just ignored completely.
So, upon further reflection, has the Thing ever died? Or Sue? I know they offed Johnny and Reed a couple times... I don't remember the other two though.

Daredevil? Dick Grayson? Hank Pym must have died at some point, right?

Daredevil? Dick Grayson? Hank Pym must have died at some point, right? I'm pretty sure Hank Pym died at the end of Avengers Academy, when his miniaturized Avengers Mansion thingy collapsed... I don't think he's been back since, actually. I could be wrong about that, though... I also feel like he MAY have been in the first issue of one of the follow up series.. it may be he just disappearned into the microverse for a while. Daredevil I thought died (or at least faked his death) after the Shadowland thing, when Black Panther took over the title? Or was he just on walkabout? Dick Grayson is still dead according to most in the DCU... he was killed during Forever Evil. WE know he didn't die, but everyone in the DCU thinks he did. I think that might count.

Not really, but he came damn close during the Joe Kelley JLA run. I don't think Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) has died. Has Spider-Man? Black Canary? The FF?
