I do wish Dredd would get a hobby, though. I mean, I’m sure most judges don’t sit in their apartments in full uniform - while reading books about the law I think that's kind of the point though, that he's so engrossed in his day to day job that he really doesn't have time for much else Oh, it is absolutely the point. Interestingly, other judges have shown some interest in other things (dating, eating out), but he’s just totally engrossed. What an existence, eh?

((Emphasis mine)) Romantic attachment is forbidden for Judges. If there are instances of Judges dating in the earliest stories, that is something that got removed as the strip found its feet.

Those are the rules, though there has been the old love child appear, and judges do form friendships despite their harsh restrictions. The "Irish" judges have different rules and are allowed to marry and have children. Don't forget that Dredd is a clone, so he's even less likely to break the rules.

Friendships, yes, but I can think of a couple of 80s stories in which Judges got caught having a romantic relationships with the opposite sex and got into trouble for it. Also, aren't all Mega-City Judges clones? I'm pretty sure that was the case back in the 70s and 80s, unless my memory's playing tricks on me (I haven't read any Judge Dredd from the 90s or beyond).

My understanding is that not all of the judges are clones, but I wouldn't bet on it.

My understanding is that not all of the judges are clones, but I wouldn't bet on it. I think parents can enroll their children in the Academy of Law after they turn five years old. I believe some of the judges are also orphans. IIRC, Judge Anderson was identified as having psychic abilities after killing her abusive father.

Except I'm not good enough to be a judge.
I think you're a pretty good judge of both music and funnybooks.

Judge Dredd is like the Mutant Turtles for me: never read the comics, never saw the movies, and unsure if I'm missing out on something I'd like.
Cei-U! I summon the gaping hole in my comics cred!

I’m wondering if this is still explored in Dredd’s world:

The 2012 Judge Dredd movie is really really good! I have read some Dredd comics over the years, but it’s been awhile. I liked them well enough, but I never read enough to have any idea what the classic Dredd stories are. I DID know the comics well enough to know that Stallone as Dredd in the 1995 movie was a very very bad idea.

I’m wondering if this is still explored in Dredd’s world: Not sure about the moon in particular, but Mega City One definitely has a space presence.. Dan Abnett is using that to do an exploration of the Judges as bad guys... I've enjoyed what I've read alot. The first two stories were called 'Insurrection' where a mining colony allows robots and 'uplifts' (mostly various primates) citizenship to help fight off alients, but the Judges refuse to honor it, and they rebel. THe 2nd story with a very similar theme but as a space western is 'Lawless' I've read the first couple trades of those, not totally sure if that's still ongoing or just waiting for the last collection.

I liked the Stallone Dredd movie because of how well it portrayed the absolute insanity of Dredd's world, but the Urban Dredd movie felt more faithful to the comics

In honor of the day today, Marvel Fanfare #15 (also happens to be my favorite issue of Marvel Fanfare ever).

I much prefer reading the progs than the collected editions since you get little touches like the letters pages, and you can enjoy the stories as they originally appeared (as part of a weekly anthology.) Plus, it takes me back to the good old days of weekly British comic magazines like Oink. There are several classic, multi-part Dredd stories that have been collected over the years. As for whether you would enjoy them, they are similar in tone to the British invasion books from the 80s. They are often dark and cynical in tone. They're anti-Thatcher, and anti-superhero. Dredd doesn't show much character growth, but the story does evolve over time.

2001: A Space Odyssey premiered on this day 55 years ago. As we all know, there was a Marvel Comics adaptation: I haven’t read this. Never been able to find it. I’m guessing licensing issues mean a reprint isn’t forthcoming. Anyone here read it?
