Is anyone reading the ongoing Weirdworld? Opinions? This was the first book I read out of the haul I got. I like it a lot, the painted artwork is something else. I believe this is the first time I've encountered Mike Del Mundo's work, and it's great. I only remember Arkon from Uncanny X-Men Annual #3 but I really like the character in this environment. It was great to see Crystar and Skull the Slayer, and the Queen of the Man-Things was a favorite, very cool concept there. It does seem like they are just throwing together a 'realm' for Arkon to encounter long lost Marvel characters, but somehow it's appealing and does the trick. Looking forward to checking out the second volume.

How would you compare it to the Battleworlds mini by Aaron? I know it has the same artist (amazing work from Del Mundo, but I wonder if it doesn't become a tad repetitive...), but apart from that and a change of writer and main character, I know nothing of what it's actually telling... I wasn't too impressed with the mini, but the current series appears to be actually going somewhere, and I'm liking the new characters, as well as the continued use of former members of the cast of Crystar. Ah, good to know : I bought the mini solely for the art, but thought that the series needs to improve a lot on the ploting if I am to follow it, since Del Mundo doesn't seem to evolve that much anymore.

Comedian #6 was really late in 2013, and by the time it came out, I had quit collecting comics and didn't really like the series as a whole enough to concern myself with getting the last issue. But I recently ordered a bunch of comics from Mile-High, mostly comics from the last three or four years, and I decided to finally get the final issue of The Comedian. It wasn't worth the wait. Azzarello had worked Eddie Blake into some key historical events throughout the series. It's an intriguing idea with lots of possibilities, and it worked very well in #4 when the Comedian involved himself in the Watts riots. (I read that issue again just a few months ago and it holds up.) In #6, we find out about Blake's role in the assassination of Robert Kennedy. It's not a very good issue. The actual assassination scene is not badly done, but some of the scenes setting it up are just really dumb. Maybe it works for people who only know the barest of facts about Bobby Kennedy and Sirhan Sirhan and what happened in Los Angeles on June 4, 1968. But I've studied it pretty closely. I wrote a history paper comparing the newspaper coverage of the assassinations (and attempts) against Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, FDR, Teddy Roosevelt and Bobby Kennedy. I talked to Boris Yaro, the photographer who took the famous photographs of Kennedy on the floor at the Ambassador Hotel. I've read a few books about Robert Kennedy and the assassination. Comedian #6 didn't work for me. So much of it just didn't make any sense. My critique had nothing to do with any pedantic pearl-clutching about historical accuracy. Historical fiction is fine, but your changes have to make sense. And this story makes Bobby look like an idealistic moron. Ugh. Just ugh. Azzarello needs an much more involved editor so much of the time.

With how well the Comedian was received as a character, I'm surprised DC didn't go out of their way more to make Peacemaker a more notable fixture in their universe

And the writing is top notch, to boot!

Most of Marvel doesn't appeal to me, but, Weirdworld looks really good.
I'll def pick it up when it goes on sale.

Black Knight, one of my favorite characters, was another one that sounded pretty good, but his series has gotten the axe.
I too love the idea of Arkon as a sci-fi Conan and truly building out from the concept of the Weirdworld name.
Typically, Marvel will have the series' older issues on sale for $.99 ea in about a year, when I'll pick them up.
If a series is super great, then and then only, will I fully support it at cover or close to it.
I'm currently reading all of my current Valiant titles, and I've been so overwhelmed that I'm committing to fully support the entire line. I'm in the process of reading it and catching up and then putting out the money.
If Weirdworld is that good, then after I catch the sale issues, I'll be glad to do the same thing with that title. It looks like it could happen. Weirdworld and Squadron Supreme both look exciting enough that it might happen.
I appreciate you guys banging the drum for Weirdworld.

I picked up a bunch of trades with some leftover tax money and amazon gift cards I had. Justice League Vol. 7 - Darkseid War Part 1 (ol' Darky vs. Anti-Moniter sounds like fun) You'd think so, wouldn't you? But it drags out forever, and it's still not done. A couple weeks ago I took it off my pull list because after reading the last one (and finding out there's yet another extra comic/series you're supposed to buy) I realized that I just didn't care what happened. Agreed. Fabok's art is terrific, no doubt and it started off so strong. Johns had some intriguing ideas within the story but now it feels more like they're just padding it to the point where I've just lost interest too. Grendel vs. Shadow was an amazing mini and they've just announced that Wagner is set to write and draw a new Shadow mini, the Death of Margo Lane. Really looking forward to that.

So I just finished Darkseid War Vol. 1 and thought it was really good. It's been a few years since I've read any modern JLA, I believe the last thing I read was Final Crisis and Blackest Night/Brightest Day. But since then I've read quite a bit of 80's JLA, and more importantly I am a fan of both Crisis and New Gods and this kind of reminded me of those good ol' days. First, the art like String said is fantastic, and makes me want to seek out more of Jason Fabok's work. It was great to see Mr. Miracle, Metron, Kalibak...even the Black Racer? That was a nice surprise. Had no idea Lex Luthor is a good guy now (reminded me of Magneto's good guy phase). Batman sitting on the Mobius Chair? Are you kidding me? Loved it. Solar Energy Superman? Loved it. It does take a while to set things up, but as a returning reader I felt I needed that setup. Thanks cliffhanger ending, now I'll have to wait until part two comes out in July.

I get what you're saying. My first exposure to the JLA was #183, part one of their annual team-up with the JSA and they're up against the New Gods on New Genesis and Apokolips so for me, they've all been there from the beginning. Which is what I loved about this arc, seeing Scott Free again was great, Johns made the New Gods imposing again. Having the League assume some of the powers and responsibilities of them was a nice twist (the six one-shots detailing what they did with those powers, maybe not. More money to spend). The throwdown between Darkseid and the Anti-Monitor was everything you'd want such a clash to contain. The Justice League felt almost insignificant against such foes and power. It sounds like this story reads better in trade versus the monthly floppy so maybe I'll give it another try when all of it has collected. Plus, if you like the New Gods, then I would also recommend the Green Lantern/New Gods: Godhead collection. Previously, Kyle Rayner the White Lantern breached the Source Wall to save the universe. He may have also inadvertently tapped into the Life Equation. Highfather believes that the Equation, which he could use against Darksied, is contained within the combined emotional spectrum and by the different Corps. So basically New Genesis declares war on the various Corps to surrender their power and rings. It's a solid fun cosmic/space opera story that crossed over all the various GL titles at the time.

You're view of the New Gods is exactly where I think they should be.
Haven't read either of these storylines yet (since they haven't been put on $ale yet), but I'm greatly looking forward to them both, and hopefully an ongoing NG title in the near future.
