Thanks for posting this PipGotta get it I came across this great cover a few months ago and decided that, should I ever win this contest again, I'd pick the theme "Religion" and kick it off with it. Funny how that worked out.

I hadn't thought of that, but yes, it does.
Of course Starlin is famously an ex-Catholic and that's part of the underlying theme of his Warlock and Dreadstar.
I'm thinking this has a Dreadstar feel to it.

Boy, there's a thesis waiting to be written on Christian imagery in bronze age DCs.

Boy, there's a thesis waiting to be written on Christian imagery in bronze age DCs. Which considering the number of Jewish creators, is interesting. I always felt for non-Christian readers, as there was never a mention of Judaism or any other religion that I can recall. The first time I remember there being an acknowledgement of Hanukkah was in this JLA isssue from 1981: Have there been others since? Outside of Izzy Cohen (who is seen at a Christmas Eve gathering in the Battle of the Bulge annual) and Irv "The Nerve" Haganah from Charlton's Fightin' Five series, I don'r recall too many Jewish characters. Characters like Ben Grimm and Colossal Boy (the conveniently named Gim Allon) kind of "became" Jewish long after their introductions. Roy Thomas made Judaism a key part of Al (Atom-Smasher) Rothstein's character in Infinity, Inc., but again, that was well into the 80s, too, IIRC.

There were the two Golems that appeared in Strange Tales and The Invaders respectively in the 70s. Both had Jewish lore as part of their origins and featured some Jewish folks in their supporting casts, either as allies or alter-egos.

Both had Jewish lore as part of their origins and featured some Jewish folks in their supporting casts, either as allies or alter-egos. I think Professor Reinstein in the original origin of Cap was probably meant to be Einstein and therefore de facto, a Jew. Again, though, nothing was overtly made of that. Of course, my knowledge of what has happened since about 1986 is next to nothing. I have read that Ragman, whom I presumed to be Irish b/c of his name -- Rory Regan -- is apparently really Jewish. Maybe in the years since that first series, his name was revealed as having been Anglicised? And I think Wildman of Easy Company fame was at some point revealed to be Jewish, too.

I think there was a Warren horror story were the Catholic Cross had no effect on a vampire because the vampire was Jewish. Or am I thinking of a Mel Brooks movie? I'm sure that's not an original idea I just had
