Chrono Trigger is in my opinion the best JRPG of all time. It's much faster paced than other JRPGs. The battles are more exciting, and it's story is very enjoyable. Much better than most Final Fantasies.

Much better than most Final Fantasies. It's right up there with FF III (or I guess VI, as it's now considered) as the best JRPG ever. Other great ones I'd recommend are Suikoden II, Phantasy Star IV, and Secret of Mana. Secret of Mana I'd compare more to an action RPG like A Link to the Past due to it's combat, but that game is a blast especially when playing with another person. One of the few JRPG's I've experienced that supports 2+ players.

I've never been able to play RPG games older than PS1 era other than Super Mario RPG on SNES, and I don't even play that anymore. I bought it then only because it was a Mario game, and had no idea what RPG was. Final Fantasy 7 was my first RPG that I wanted to play and so will always hold a special place in my heart FF8 and FF9 are also very good. Vagrant Story, Wild Arms 2, Breath of Fire IV, Legends of Dragoon, and Parasite Eve (though that isn't ATB turn based) I all enjoyed to some degree. Chrono Cross/Trigger, Persona, and Xenogears are series however I never got into for whatever reason, so I have never played them. I even own Final Fantasy 5 & 6 on the Anthology collection on PS1 and tried to get into them, but just couldn't. Not after the visual spectacle of FF7 and other RPGs of that time.

I have heard good things about Chrono Trigger/Cross, but never did try them. Looks like Chrono Trigger is available for only $10 on the PS3 store. I might have to give it a try one day after I work through my huge PC backlog.

I also forgot Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. I love the Metal Gear series and never get tired of it. The Phantom Pain is a superb game. I haven't played any of the other Metal Gear games (I do own a few, just haven't got around to playing them), but MGSV is one of the very best stealth-action games ever.

Shortlist of what I want to eventually getting around to playing: Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age. I have the original for PS2 and loved it. I remember essentially getting everything in the game. The new HD touchup with bonus features/new music looks great. I forgot the story so I think this would be fun to revisit. Vagrant Story I am Setsuna Catherine PS3 (bought it a while ago, haven't played) Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster PS4 (bought it a while ago, haven't played) Tomb Raider Definitive Edition PS4 (bought it a while ago haven' played) Dragon Ball Z: Gokuden (series of role playing games on the NES) Final Fantasy 7 (played, never finished) Final Fantasy 6 (played, never finished) Uncharted Trilogy (came with PS4, haven't started) Batman Arkham Night (haven't finished) I've been cut off from my PS3/PS4 for months now because of my living situation. Once that changes hopefully I can go back to this escapism from time to time. FFXII is my favourite after FFVI. Vagrant Story and reboot Tomb Raider are also great games. I'm currently playing Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Chapter 2. I like a lot of JRPGs and this series (never knew it till it came to Steam) has become one of my favourites For those interested: 1. Shin Megami Tensei (including Persona): haven't played all of them, but the combination of mythology and modern/near-future scenarios really appeals to me. 2. Legend of Heroes: More classical JRPG, but the world is fully realised (lots of cities with NPCs each having their own dialogue, which changes as events happen), a relatively low-level story (no world-ending threats) and power-level (you have magic and abilities, but you are not fighting dragons and gods), but fun and likeable characters. It has a lot of charm to it. 3. Final Fantasy: I like individual Final Fantasies a lot, but the series is such a mixed bag, that I can't place it higher. I put Vagrant Story in the FF-series BTW. 4. Shadowhearts: The third one made laugh so hard: Boilerplate Disclaimer in the title "All characters herein are fictional and any resemblance to real people is coincidental." Yeah, I don't think you can use that sentence if you place your game in pre-WWII USA and make Al Capone and Elliot Ness characters in your game. Anyway games set in actual historical timeperiods (even if they have little to do with the actual time period) have bonuspoints with me. (See also Shin Megami Tensei's Raidou series, set during 1930s.) plus Lovecraftian themes. But too silly to commit to its Lovecraftian themes, so it's not at the top of the list. 5. Valkyrie Profile: Love I and II, never played III. Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross are great games, but 2 games, I won't call a series. I tried the Tales series, but found them disappointing, same with Grandia and Wild ARMs. Breath of Fire was good, but I played too little of it. Souls-series: Like them a lot, I don't really see them as JRPGs. More like Action games with stats; the main attraction for me is the fighting system. Parasite Eve: I like both I and II, but by II it's no longer an RPG, but a survival horror game. The rest of the series, I haven't played, but apparently they are terrible.

I tried to get into Parasite Eve, too. Being a hybrid of FF7 style RPG and Survival Horror (which I LOOOOOOOOOOVED back in the day) I had high hopes, but it just didn't hold my attention. Ironically, I think I could enjoy RPG style gameplay more these days as I've mellowed out, but I don't have the free time. Ah, well.

Getting closer to finishing Rage, and I think I may have been a little harsh on its visuals. All of my problems with it still apply, but as I went to different areas the art direction was impressive, as were the character and enemy animations. It still looks disappointing for a supposedly high end PC game from 2011, but it has more going for it than just tech. I think I might have been able to run it on my old laptop.

After beating Rage I tried out Doom, and boy was I in for a shock. The graphics were so dark I couldn't see a thing. It looked nothing like the youtube vids and screenshots and it was harder to see than in Doom 3. It's amazing I made it outdoors, where things weren't any better. Looking for a brightness setting I raised the gamma settings from their default 0.2 to 0.7, and that did the trick. It looks normal. Somehow I'm running the game at max settings with no framrate dips, and it looks glorious. I just wish I could have seen it from the start instead of not being able to see for the first 20 minutes of the game. I don't understand why the gamma settings would be set by default to something that makes the game practically unplayable.

It's hard to account for everyone's different setups, and it sounds like there was just a weird mismatch with yours. I had no issues with mostly default settings aside from tweaking settings to work on my hardware. The game is gorgeous. Also, without spoilers, there are findable extras that encourage replaying levels, so you can easily go back and replay those areas with your new settings. That was such a fun game.

I'm thinking about getting Warframe on the Xbox1 but it appears it can't be played 100% single player. And there's no local co-op. I'd really like to try it because it's by the makers of Dark Sector. But I don't plan on buying Xbox Live and this maybe the only way to play it other than trying Steam.

Looking forward to playing Final Fantasy VI on my phone via SNES emulation. I remember playing in years ago, but never finished it like a lot of games. Trying to get back into playing a good RPG again. At least while my PS4 access is on hiatus. Maybe I'll go back to Chrono Trigger after that. Still kicking myself that I didn't finish it a few months ago before my phone screwed up. i'm a sucker for time travel stories. Well...if they're done well that is. And Chrono Trigger up to the point I stopped was pretty good.

I've more or less taken a hiatus on games to work on other projects, but fired up Dragon Age Origins again and was sucked back in. I guess i wasn't over it, just needed a breather, haha. I do love that game, but man, it takes a while. I picked up Red Dead Redemption finally since it's one of those classics of the format I never got around to. I wasn't really sucked in right away. I get there's a big introductory period and I'm basically in a glorified tutorial, and I do believe it gets more interesting, but I am just not feeling it right now. I did the same with Fallout New Vegas, though - didn't get into it right away, tried again a year+ later, and now it's one of my favorite games. I'll give it another go after more time passes. That said, man, it's a little rough going back in time to the graphical compromises of that era, I'm spoiled with 1080p/60fps and high-ultra graphics on my PC. First world problems. Adam/others, if you still have older era 3D games to work through and aren't spoiled on the latest gen stuff yet, I say go do all that first before you know what you're missing out on!

I'm actually still, yet part time mostly, working on BotW. Not much to go though. A few more upgrades and I am going to fight Ganon and then take a break from it. I haven't been playing much in general. I probably have a dozen games on the 360 or PS3 that I haven't played but bought with the intention of doing so. But I still haven't started any of them.
All I played on the Xbox1 so far is a bit of Gears of War 4 with my son. But he either isn't interested in it in general, or is far past my skill level he's not wanting to play with me, but won't say. :-) Which I admit I've gotten to where enjoying the experience is what helps me chill out and relax with a game, more so than the challenge. Maybe that's the old age and increased need for more sleep. Between work, errands, school activities and bill paying and etc and etc .... I just want to chill when I play games. So the Xbox1 might not get much use from me, and that's okay. As I said I have plenty of games to play on old consoles to keep me entertained.

I'm hoping to set up a gaming PC soon. Aside from a bit of Deus Ex and Star Wars Battlefront on a friend's ancient, shuddering PC, I've been a console gamer my whole life. I'm looking forward to finally playing some games that were only released on PC, especially Thief.
