The video game version of “there I said it” ... FPS are the pop music of video games. Hahaha. Okay, counterpoint in the same analogy: for all of the Britney Spears or Justin Biebers of the world, don't forget that The Beatles and The Beach Boys were pop music, too. Side point. Doom 2016 is the thrash/death metal of video games.

All joking aside there are good FPS, they’re just rare for me to like. FEAR was an exception and I’m kind of interested in trying out the Metro games. I’d put Halo CE on the list but the rest were just meh as far as the campaigns. I think old Halo games get most of their love from the multiplayer.

Yeah, I get what you're saying, especially today with how many throwaway mindless ones are out there like Fortnite, etc. I also like the ones that have some twist on the formula or that are just REALLY good at the balls to the wall action. I think you would like Metro. They have the vibe of a third person shooter. Very atmospheric and immersive. Did you play any of the Fallout games? They are made to look like FPS, but they are really more RPGs in FPS clothes. Except Fallout 4 actually felt like a shooter. BTW I'm nearly done with Horizon Zero Dawn. That game is AMAZING. It's very classic sci-fi with a "tribal society in the ruins of high tech" theme. Super cool.

Metro games are probably fairly cheap whether I download them (if available) or find a used copy. I really like atmospheric and immersive, because for some reason I don't get immersed in FPS in general as I do third person for some reason. So if Metro is anything close that like FEAR, it will be worth playing,
I tried Fallout 3 but didn't really care for it. But that may have just been my mood at the time. I could really get into it at that time.
I've heard really good things about Horizon Zero Dawn. From the way you describe it, it reminds me of the Lost Planet series. Which I enjoyed playing solo or local co-op (whichever games offered both).

You are basically an outcast in a tribal society with robotic animals and dinosaurs roaming about. You are trying to prove yourself and survive and figure stuff out about yourself and the ruins of society. It's really cool, and I won't say more than that.

Been in a bit of Decap Attack mood, so been playing lots of that what with it being October and all Forgot how difficult it is, or maybe it's because I generally suck at action platformers, IDK..

Points for the retro throwback. I've been getting into the Halloween mood this month with Bloodborne. It's my first FromSoftware game I played more than once (Dark Souls series), and I am ADDICTED. I love the gothic/Lovecraftian atmosphere, and while it is punishingly hard it is only because it is punishingly fair, cold and uncaring. Anything can kill you, but you can kill them right back if you're good enough. Really fun and immersive and sometimes frustrating but mostly in a good way. More "I can do better and win!" versus rage quit and throw the controller (which I only threw once, thank you very much).

I was seriously thinking for a very long time about getting a PS4 solely for Bloodbourne. You just don't see a lot of Victorian gothic style games, if ever Also been playing a lot of Vectorman and various Genesis/Mega-Drive Beat-Em-Ups. Thinking hard about getting a Mega Everdrive for my birthday this year, love the console that much

Thinking hard about getting a Mega Everdrive for my birthday this year, love the console that much Yeah, there's not much else like it. You can snag a PS4 cheap enough these days that it's worth it. Yeah, I had a nostalgia wave for 16-bit era beat-em-ups not too long ago, too. I found they got really stale rather quickly after the nostalgia wore off. For me, the great ones were fairly rare, and there was a glut because that's all the tech could handle at the time lol. Perhaps most relevant to this board, I tried to replay X-MEN Mutant Apocalypse from the SNES. I remember playing it a lot as a kid, but man, it sucked now lol. That said, I really wish there were more modern comic book themed games being made with modern production value and gameplay. I'm pretty sure I've made a similar post in this thread at some point a few months or years ago. The Arkham games have shown it can be done at a very high level and be commercially viable, and with superheroes arguably the most popular they've ever been, I don't get why more studios aren't jumping all over it. Could you imagine a gritty Wolverine game in the vein of God of War and Dark Souls? The healing factor would suit modern health regen gameplay mechanics naturally, and if he takes too much damage before he can heal, he "dies" or is knocked out to heal and time passes before you respawn or whatever. The brutal combat and huge bosses could match with stuff like sentinels or whatever really well.

I'm still chipping away at Warframe. Haven't played much else except for a bit of Dark Sector and BotW last weekend for nostalgia sake.
Though I am thinking about starting a Subnautica game. My son speaks highly of it and the exploration aspect of it, I think, will keep me entertained and hold my attention.

I'm still playing Bloodborne. After you beat the main story once, it dumps you into New Game+. You keep your levels and stuff and start over but all the enemies are harder. It's an interesting new balance and I'm still quite enjoying it. I will probably start Dark Souls 3 at some point next as it's the easiest next step as they're built on the same engine.

I hear a lot about Bloodborbe and Dark Souls series, but I have yet to try either of them. I am assuming they are something like Skyrim/Witcher in how they play?

They are third-person hack and slash type games, but this developers games are notorious for being very tough and unforgiving, but not necessarily in an unfair way. It has twisted monsters and giant bosses, and you will die a lot, but they make dying not a big deal in the game. It's part of the experience. As you get better though, you are just as dangerous to them as they are to you. I was intimidated to start due to their reputation, but my friend wanted to play Bloodborne and didn't have a PS4, so I grabbed it on sale. I was sucked in.

I played a lot of SNES, NES, Gameboy/Gameboy Advance, and N64 through emulation in my teens and with the exception of the NES & Gameboy/GBA, I got pretty bored of the pair of them. With the Genesis/Mega-Drive, it was different, mostly because there was a wider breadth of games on there that I wanted to play and ones that I often go back to time and again. So in that respect, I do feel like a flash cart is a worthwhile investment
