Yeah, I had a nostalgia wave for 16-bit era beat-em-ups not too long ago, too. I found they got really stale rather quickly after the nostalgia wore off. For me, the great ones were fairly rare, and there was a glut because that's all the tech could handle at the time lol. Perhaps most relevant to this board, I tried to replay X-MEN Mutant Apocalypse from the SNES. I remember playing it a lot as a kid, but man, it sucked now lol. I played a lot of SNES, NES, Gameboy/Gameboy Advance, and N64 through emulation in my teens and with the exception of the NES & Gameboy/GBA, I got pretty bored of the pair of them. With the Genesis/Mega-Drive, it was different, mostly because there was a wider breadth of games on there that I wanted to play and ones that I often go back to time and again. So in that respect, I do feel like a flash cart is a worthwhile investment Very cool, and I am only speaking for myself, not trying to dump on anyone else's good time, so sorry if it came off that way. Yeah, Genesis had some of the more diverse and quirky games that are not just Final Fight clones. I have my classics I go back to, as well. I replay Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past every so many years, and I play Zelda 2 The Adventure of Link for fun, too. Yes, for fun!

For those who may not know and may be interested, Crusader Kings 2 is free on Steam. I always preferred Europa Unversalis 4, but it won't play on my computer at this point so I've been playing a fair bit of CK2.

I picked up at some point in the past, likely the last time it was free. I'd like to get into it, but it is too daunting right now. Every time I've tried I've glazed over and walked away. Might not be the right life stage to take something on that complicated. After the kids are a little older and consistently sleeping through the night and sleeping in late in the morning.

Don't get me wrong, the SNES and N64 had some good games too, but I had played most of them to death and a lot of them weren't worth revisiting. I also don't care for bog standard RPGs, so that also throws a crap ton of SNES games out the window. IDK, I kind of like games that are easy to just pick up and play and aren't overly complex

It took me a long time to be able to get into it...which wasn't a problem I had with EU4. If you want to give it a go there's a brand new tutorial by Quill that is pretty useful. Those three videos plus a look at a short "Let's play" should put you where you need to be. But it can definitely be daunting.

Started playing Yu-Gi-Oh! Stairway To The Destined Duel and Pokemon Fire Red
Stairway To The Destined Duel was a friggin' gateway drug for me back in the day and helped me to learn and appreciate Duel Monsters as a card game, also doesn't hurt that it takes place during the Battle City Arc of the anime, which I loved. Really great little sim, but my only problem is that the decks that you choose to start with are absolute crap with too many lvl 6 to 8 monsters and not enough lower level ones to spawn them. Kind of makes the opening play through difficult as hell until you either win by sheer luck and get one of many card packs to choose from or get one of the weekly free card packs
In my years of playing Pokemon, I've never really touched Fire Red or Leaf Green and have preferred to just go back to the Gen 1 games, even though many claim that they're broken as hell. Not much has really changed gameplay wise with the upgrade to Ruby & Sapphire tech, though it does look a lot nicer

I have played very pokemon generation and when I play gen one I prefer firered. Lets go pikachu/Eevee is also a gen one remake, on the switch, but its a bit different. i have only really been playing on my switch for some time now and it is pretty greate.

Been playing around with my Mega Everdrive X3 and absolutely love it. Such a wonderful feeling to play all the games I've gushed over via emulator on my medium sized Sanyo CRT

I don't know who if anyone plays Warframe. But recently they did a big update. It's a online free to play third person shooter. Well with the update players can make their own rail jack (space ship) and now participate in Star Wars like dogfights. You can customize your rail jack and even name it. I decided (when I finish building it) to name mine Thanoscopter, just to see if anyone gets it being that MCU movies have now made Thanos a household name.

Totally agree. So glad we still have three working CRT TVs in the house.

Well, I am between games at the moment, and I am hoping to keep it that way for a while. It's nice not having something sucking up all my free evenings so I can get something else done. Just beat the main storyline in Dark Souls 3. I have the DLC, too, which is supposed to be both very good and VERY hard. After beating Bloodborne twice back to back and then Dark Souls 3, I think I've had my fill of insanely hard weird creepy action games. I liked them both a lot, especially Bloodborne, but I'm all set for a while.
That said, has anyone been keeping up with the PS5 rumors? It is shaping up to be a really cool system. Priced to launch somewhere around $500 ish, backwards compatibility with at least PS4 day one, Ultra HD bluray included... I don't recall if I read this or am hoping, but if they also have backwards compatibility with PS1/2 discs I will buy one as soon as I possibly can. I have some old PS1 and 2 games I'd like to revisit, but I don't wanna deal with aging hardware, crappy analog cables looking shitty on HD TVs, troubleshooting emulators, etc.
If I could just pop in my old PS1 RPG discs in the living room and fire up some nostalgia, man.. that is tempting.

It's been a long time since I invested 80 plus hours in a video game like I have over the past three plus weeks or so. At age 32, I definitely felt a presence in my head conveying to me what a huge waste of time it was to be dedicating so much attention to a video game. However, Dragon Ball Z Kakarot is a game that I had been waiting for years to come out. Finally, a RPG-style game on a next gen console that was based on my favorite anime. I honestly wasn't sure I'd ever see the day happen, as most games that exist based on the franchise are fighting style games, a genre that I'm just not into as much as I used to be. The game definitely exceeded my expectations, and it was a pleasure to play. I'm essentially done with it now, and I had a lot of fun. I'm not sure if a sequel will be developed, but I wouldn't be surprised since it's made a good amount of money so far last I heard. This year I really wanted to catch up on video games, since there is a stash on my PS4 that I haven't played yet. Even with other aspects of my life getting in the way, I did want to make a concentrated effort to get at least an hour or sometimes two a day indulging in this form of escapism, even at the expense of a little more sleep. However, I definitely went overboard with this one. Even if it was a game I was really looking forward to, I shouldn't have indulged myself to this degree neglecting my personal obligations in the process. Hopefully with the next game I decide to play, I won't be as trigger happy.

Hopefully with the next game I decide to play, I won't be as trigger happy. You know what? It's not a waste of time. Entertainment and relaxing and doing something for yourself is important. Self care is important. You deserve to have some enjoyment time on your own. We don't exist to work and sleep.
I also sometimes pay for my game time out of sleep. It's untenable long term, and l agree that shouldn't be the norm, but every once in a while a game just sucks you in. Part of why I still haven't finished Dragon Age Origins in 2-3 years (I don't even remember) despite loving it and its story is it is just not good for my health lol. It's not something you can pick up for 30 minutes here and there, and I'm not in a life stage where I can afford looking at the clock on a work night and going "Shit, it's 3am." One day I will finish. So close...

And as per the previous topic, I will absolutely not be downloading this as I have other stuff I am trying to do in my life right now lol.
