I'd played the original top-down 2D ones and GTA3, but rarely more than for brief mayhem binge sessions. Vice City was the first one I recall a concerted effort to do the missions and progress in the game, largely due to a college room mate playing through. We mostly watched him but all took some turns. Then came San Andreas. Wow, that a game. That one had everything going for it. Awesome setting, timing, soundtrack, improved controls and graphics, the addition of RPG elements and character customization. Turf wars mini game, great cast, just wow. Easily my favorite in the series by far. I'd love to play a remake/remaster with all the original dialogue and music intact but with improved visuals and controls, better saving, and my God fixing/allowing you to skip some of the annoying missions. Specifically talking to RC planes and the fly through the hoop ones. Yeah, don't get me wrong, San Andreas has a lot going for it and I enjoyed it a lot. I just like Vice City more because of sentimental reasons Oh yeah, fair enough. I wasn't trying to say you were wrong and I was right or anything. That's just the one I'm more nostalgic for personally.

New PS5. The showcase presser with tons of game trailers was a few days ago. Mostly in-house stuff, which isn't a surprise. I really liked some of the stuff I saw, but I know it's early, and I'm thinking that it's going to take a few years before developers can really push the limits of the new system. The new Spiderman somewhat-sequel with Miles Morales looked nice. The thing is, I'm still so backlogged on my PS4, that a PS5 in the next two years is probably unlikely unless some major titles drop that get me really excited to the point that I have to invest in one.

I think my continued purchasing of consoles is about over. My continued interest in Warframe on Xbox1 (and how DE handles putting their game on whatever platform for the future) and BotW2 are about the only thing holding me in. I haven't really gotten into most any other games I've tried in the past 4-5 years. I basically went from multiple games to just Minecraft, then just BoTW and now Warframe.
My boy is 17, he's got money saved, if he wants to continue on with a PS5 (which I am sure he does) that's on him. It's one of the reasons I've had him saving money and why I've been adding to his savings account some myself. I think I've reached the point, like with modern comics, where I'd rather spend my time going back and playing old games (I probably have 2 dozen from 360/PS3 alone I haven't even played) then investing in new ones.

Yeah, I like how sleek the system looks. My only concern on that photo is looking at the controller. I hope they haven't replaced physical buttons with recessed touchpads or something. Eliminating the physical contours of things is a trend I really dislike. I like having tactile cues without having to look at what I'm doing.
That said, I'm not in a hurry to buy PS5, if the rumors and hopes of strong backward compatibility are true, that will make it easier, especially if there's a performance bump a la XBOX One X and old school games.

I have all of the current big consoles for this generation, X1, PS4 and Nintendo switch. I know I am going to buy the new Xbox when it comes out. Its loking like its going to be mostly backwards compariteble with current games and I have a lot I still havent played. I could wait to buy a new one but my current one is the original x1 model, so not one of the improved slim or x versions, and its really on its last leg now so I might as well buy the new one when it comes out. I did not buy my PS4 until last year, and I am going to wait just as long to buy the the next one.

Some general information about the system taken from the PS5 subreddit:

Is PS5 more powerful than Xbox Series X?
PR bs aside, we already know that the XBox Series X will be more powerful than the PS5. The specs for both are available, and the XBox will have a slightly better CPU and a significantly better GPU. The PS5 has the better SSD so it will be able to load games faster, but once the games are loaded the X-Box Series X will be able to push better visuals on screen.

Either way, both systems are such a leap forward that I am excited, as this will raise the floor for developers as they don't have to intentionally hold back what they can do on PC for increasingly-aged console hardware.

So I was playing Midway Arcade Treasures last night while listening to Def Leppard on my Boombox and decided to try out Bubbles. Guys, I think I might be addicted...

Finished up Final Fantasy XV, which didn't take that long (it's still a long game, but in my memory the other games took much longer). I haven't completed all sidequest (there is still the optional Adamantoise with its 5 million HP, which just seems like such a drag to fight and various special dungeons.) The Windows versions comes with 3 of the 4 pieces of DLC (the last 2 DLC episodes were cancelled) and I played 2 of those (each of them focuses on one of your party members). The final DLC I haven't bought, but I think I will.
The story is pretty straightforward for a Final Fantasy: Prince Noctis Lucis and his entourage (bodyguard/trainer Gladiolus, butler/driver/cook Ignis and best friend Prompto) set off in his dad's car for the city of Altissia, to marry his fiancee, the oracle Lunafreya. On their way, the capitol gets invaded by the standard Evil Empire and his father, King Regis, gets killed. So Noctis has to stay out of the Empire's hands, avoid the various demons that come out at night and meet up with his fiancee and fulfill a prophecy to banish all demons while being manipulated by the Empire's Chancellor Ardyn. Also get some fishing done, because it's a JRPG.
For the first 10 chapters, the game is Open-World game (with two seperate maps, the Kingdom of Lucis and the island of ALtissia) and still looks really good. It's a lot more actiony than the previous FF's who tend to be turn-based games. From the end of chapter 10 onwards, you're on rails to the end (though you can return to previous places from safe points and clean up quests that you still have left open). Sidequests are usually pretty simple and many are not worth the time. I enjoyed some of the hunts, but I rather have just a few interesting hunts than the 100+ hunts we have now where >50 or just slightly stronger versions of existing monsters. Controls are annoying (I advise to get the PC version, because it allows you to remap buttons. Somebody in development thought it was smart to bind jump and interact to the same button on PS4/X-box. On PC you get run&interact default on the same button which is also not great).
Storywise: the DLC has done some lifting to fill in some gaps in the story. The main criticism I've seen is that all important events seem to happen off-screen. I can agree with some of that, though I do think that having Noctis not present, but away from home when it gets destroyed by the Empire and having to find out through newspapers, works well. I like the more straightforward story, though it's clear that the game was rushed to be published due to its enormous costs making the later chapters feel rushed and sparse.
Overall I liked it, but it's not my favourite FF (those are 6 and 12), it's about in the middle for me.

I just finished Days Gone on the PS4. It's another twist on the zombie-type monster post-apocalypse, but with motorcycles. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story is tied to gradually introducing items and game mechanics in a really gradual and consistent way, and it's done well so there's a sense of how huge and expansive the world is until you get near the end. It does a good job with progression without it being blatantly obvious that you're leveling up. Early on a group of three zombies was a legitimate mortal threat to your character, and by the end you are torching hordes. I really enjoyed the story, too.
I will probably take a break since I've been going pretty hard at it for 2 months, but I will likely revisit and do a new game plus or just play again at a harder difficulty. Now that I know the area and the mechanics I would approach it much less cautiously.

I've been playing Ghost of Tsushima. It's been getting a good bit of praise for the presentation (very deserved), but as someone who isn't good at games, I appreciate the combat mechanics a lot. I feel like I'm actually accomplishing something without button-mashing. I also think it does an excellent job of opening up the world and unlocking skills. If I can't do something, I feel pretty confident that I'll progress to a point (be it via skill or weapon upgrade) where I can pull it off, which is a nice change of pace from the usual wall I hit in games where there's just a big difficulty spike or the game decides "ok if you can't do this yet you shouldn't be playing".

Too interesting not to share. For a few months now, there's been a very slow drip feed of Nintendo prototypes and other such guff posted on 4chan's Retro Game board. Here's something of a run down
