I recently played through Firewatch. A mystery set in the forest in the 1980s with a unique art style. It's a short game with a very but sad story. Its worth six hours if you can find it on sale for $10 or less or so. This reminds me of Limbo on the 360. Very short game but left an impact on me due to the story and characters. (Also stupid damn spiders. Why does it always have to be stupid damn spiders.)
It's interesting to see that more and more indie developers are adding arachnaphobia modes to their game. Sadly I have a different phobia and no developers have added modes for that yet.

So, on this my second day off of a weeklong R&R session, I was mulling over something to do having watched my fill of youtube, netflix, disney plus and the like. So I looked over at my stack of games and was having a hankering for a platformer, of which I have many for the PS1. But one in particular caught my eye; Ape Escape It's a game that I've loved just as long as I've had it. I remember renting from blockbuster back in the day thanks in part to my babysitter who furnished my playthrough with Taco Bell and Sonic The Hedgehog The Movie. As soon as I got done, I pleaded with my father on a long-distant phone call to send it to me in a care package and he did just that. I got pretty far in it over the years until my memory card bricked my ps1, almost to the last level I feel like the gimmick of gadgets and the full use of the dual shock are what set it a part the most and I'm kind of longing for a remaster treatment like Crash and Spyro got, but that probably won't happen I really hope they do a proper remake of this game. I had the demo when I was in high school 20+ years ago, and I liked it at the time. If I recall right, it was the first game to use the Dual Shock. At least the first to require it. I never did get around to fully playing it. In the last year or so, I saw it on PS Now and went to give it a try, and UGH. It has aged horrendously. It is super cool you have familiarity with it and can still enjoy it. Unfortunately, I found the controls and camera just far too dated to enjoy. The concept is fun, though, and it would be great to see a modern reimagining.

Unfortunately, I found the controls and camera just far too dated to enjoy. The concept is fun, though, and it would be great to see a modern reimagining. Oh, any time you have a vehicle to drive the controls are absolutely horrendous. I instantly remembered the row boat section from early on that you have to use to get past an electric catfish. I just took my chances with the water net and sped around it It's far from a perfect game. For instance, the in-game models for Spike and Jake are, even for the time, laughable at best. But overall, I still love it. Never had much interest in the sequels Muppet Monster Adventure is another game that I was sent as a kid by my dad. Never recalled asking for it, let alone knew about it, but it's a fun little game where you play as Kermit's nephew Robin and have to save various muppet characters who've been turned into movie monsters (Kermit is Frankenstein's Monster, Piggy is the Bride, Fozzie is a Were-bear, and Gonzo is Nosferatu)

Well, all right then! On the topic of retro games, I saw two very exciting items in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles world. One is a free fan-made game that is available today. It is a SNES-style remaster and remix of the classic NES TMNT games. I can vouch for it being solid as I got a few hours in last night! Very easy to download, and no real installation needed. If you play with a controller you just need to go into the settings and map the buttons the first time.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Rescue-Palooza - free fan game
The other is the below teaser trailer for an upcoming project. I am preparing my wallet! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Shredder's Revenge

Very hyped for Shredder's Revenge. Unfortunately I can't get OPENBOR games to work on my newer laptop due to screen resolution issues

Looks like if you want to get all of Final Fantasy VII's story in it's entirety, there will be a way to do that coming very soon. It will be on Android/IOS, but hopefully go to consoles later. Final Fantasy VII remake (semi it looks like) with all of the FFVII tie-in games. This will be right up my alley, since in the 1990s I was aware of FFVII, but didn't have a Playstation at the time, and didn't fall in love with the franchise until FFIX. Over the years FFVII has grown so grandiose with it's connected games, and what not, I was a little intimidated to get involved. Only played the main title once or twice, and stopped midway through.
Hopefully it's not a Japanese Gacha game or some other bullshit that doesn't measure up. Folks are already saying it's strange in that trailer that Tifa is fighting a boss she isn't supposed to, same with Aerith. Still, for story purposes, this is still interesting in my opinion. We'll see in a year.

Been playing Wipeout Fusion again. Really love the sheer sense of speed the game has once you upgrade your desired ship enough

Bought Hot Shots Tennis at work the other day. It's pretty fun for what it is and does have some depth in the way you hit the ball and how all the different courts effect it (I'm sure that this isn't a novel feature, but I don't play many tennis games tbh). JJ is probably my favorite unlocked character so far, mostly due to how fast he runs

Bought myself a Bittboy Pocket Go from Amazon after mulling over the idea for about 2 weeks. Been wanting a portable console to take with me to work to play during down time. Seems like a fairly competent machine from the reviews that I've both watched and read and the price was too good to pass up at $45

With all the nostalgia we've seen for vintage platform games over the past few decades, all the reto systems being released and virtual retro libraries available for download, it amazes me that there is no such resurgence of nostalgie for PC games. It's getting harder and harder to run classic software without having to go through dosbox or risk screwing things up by partitioning your hard drive. I'm a middle aged guy with money: someone take my money and give me a simple way to access software from all eras and all operating systems, please.

Gotta say, if you like long RPGs and open world games like I do, the quarantine has been great for making progress in the backlog faster than one game every several months. I was able to go through the entire four-game Trails of Cold Steel series in less than six months, plus the long-awaited Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition and finishing up my despawn run in Dark Souls 2.
After the ToCS games, I dabbled in some shorter stuff for a change of pace, mostly the demolition derby/racing game Wreckfest. Now I'm dipping into some longer story-based games again, looking for something to stick with. The shooter Metro didn't do it for me; Control has some promising stuff but also needs better shooting skills under pressure than I have, and also has plenty of platforming, which I hate, so that's off to the side for now; and Final Fantasy XII wasn't grabbing me, so that's off to the side also. But Persona 5 Royal is looking very promising so far. The art style is completely different, as are the look and feel in general, and I'm getting a real kick out of it in the few hours I've played.
What I'm really doing is killing time until Nier Replicant gets a patch or two. I've been intending to play the original Nier and Nier Automata (two of my favorite games ever) back to back, and was thrilled to learn this remaster/remake of the former was on its way. Can't wait to go through them again.

Oh, there is, trust me. Good Old Games is a good place to go. They offer older pc games for reasonable prices that are optimized to run on modern hardware through pre-configured versions of Dosbox. I was pretty darned well addicted to Dungeon Keeper for a while
Steam also has some older PC games too, but it's not a wide or varied a selection as GOG

And best of all, GOG's version of the games are all DRM-free.

So I got my Bittboy Pocket Go in and I've been very happy with it. Has a lot of bells and whistles, some of which I'll probably never or even need to touch and feels good in the hands for how compact it is. Laughing at the fact that I was bothered by the idea of having to manually adjust the sound via buttons on the pad but then I realized this morning that it had a volume slider on the side. It also came with old video game roms built in, but I quickly replaced those with my own
