I actually liked Man of Steel a lot. I realize it's not everyone's cup of tea but I found it very enjoyable. Especially in the fact that when Clark learns where he came from and who his parents were, it doesn't fundamentally change who he is personally...in Superman the Movie Clark ceases to be a real person. In essence, he becomes nothing more than a suit and glasses that stumbles around until Superman is needed. Now I'll admit! I do love the first Superman movie despite this...I was Seven years old when it came out so it's right up there with Star Wars as far as Childhood Mega Movies go. Christopher Reeve really was the perfect choice to play Superman at that time. So much so that while I like Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer on Legends, his Superman fell short to me. Personally It felt like Brandon Routh Playing Christopher Reeve Playing Superman. (He would have made a great Christopher Reeve if they wanted to do a biopic of the late actor's life.)

To be fair, Returns is something of a sequel to the Donner films so if Routh was channeling Reeves in his performance, I can't fault him for that. Routh's portrayal held the same heroic qualities that Reeves portrayed so well. I find nothing heroic nor inspiring about Cavill's portrayal so far.

What I liked the most in Superman returns is that once again, Cyclops gets the girl!!!
Kidding. The plane sequence was awesome.

I really don't have a favorite. I find things I like in each one that adds to my fondness of Superman. If I had to choose favorites out of the movies listed, my favorites are Superman, Superman II, and Man of Steel.

One more movie that nobody talks about here on this thread ... it's George Reeves Superman and the Mole Men that came out in 1951 and it's wasn't all that bad and it's the shortest Superman movie on record and I do like this movie for sentimental reasons alone. It has a good story and fairly good acting by everyone that appeared in this film. I would put this film above both Superman III and Superman IV Quest for Peace.

Superman IV is included in the poll as a mental health screening, right? To get any posters who need a cat scan or MRI the help they need?

I voted for Superman The Movie because it's still the best superhero feature film ever made. Accept no substitutes.
Superman II is very nearly as good as the first and, actually, I do prefer the original theatrical cut to the Donner Cut. The latter is very interesting though. Superman III is a bit too silly for my tastes, but it's still a guilty pleasure of mine. Superman IV: The Quest For Peace sucks ass.
The trouble with the four Christopher Reeve films is that the get steadily worse and worse on pretty much every front because they had less and less money spent on them.
Superman Returns gets a really bad rap and isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Plus, Brandon Routh did an excellent job of the impossible task of stepping into Christopher Reeves' shoes. I could've done without the "Super-Baby" element, but all in all, I do like the film a fair bit.
Based on the trailers, word of mouth, and things my friends have said after seeing them, I have no interest whatsoever in seeing Man Of Steel or Batman vs. Superman. Henry Cavill's dark, angsty Superman isn't my Superman and I've about as much interest in Batman vs Superman as I do in Godzilla vs. Mothra.

The first Donner Superman movie is still tops in my book. Is it perfect? By no means. But considering it was made in the 70s, I do think it has aged decently. More importantly, I think it really nails what I consider to be the defining characteristic of Superman compared to other superheroes. The phrase I would use to describe Superman is "benevolent protector". "Benevolent" because he does what he does not out of a sense of guilt, or vengeance, or childhood trauma, but out of altruism. "Protector" because, simply put, he saves people. His power set -- invulnerability, super strength, flight -- enables him to make rescues that no one else can. Saving people doesn't always require fisticuffs, so he can still be a hero when there's no bad guy to punch out. When I envision Superman, the images that most resonate with me are the ones where he is protecting people. To me, this is the defining characteristic of Superman, and something the Donner films got right. Man of Steel missed this mark by miles. I really wanted to like MoS, and actually, the first half or so of the movie isn't bad. The whole scene with Jor-El where he talks about how Kal must be a symbol of hope and a guide for the humans to reach their potential, that hit a lot of the same notes as the Donner films. But it all went downhill when Zod shows up. Snyder set up Superman's mission on Earth in such a promising way but didn't deliver on any of that. He threw it all out the window because he wanted to show Superman punching things and buildings exploding.
