...you know the names of many people who had letters of comment published 40 years ago, but you don't know the name of the people who live across the street from you. ....if you've read more correspondence from 'T.M. Maple' over the years than you have correspondence in your local town newspaper. That would be everybody, then. The man was a legend. It would be interesting to speculate on what he'd have thought of more recent developments at DC in particular. Jim Burke, you're still missed.

And in the same vein, if you remember Irene Vartanoff, Guy Lillian III, Paul Gambaccini, Joe Arul, Martin Pasko, Marvin Wolfman, Cary Bates and Mike Friedrich from their letter-writing days, you're an old comic book nerd.

Oh, and Tony Isabella! When I started reading DC, it seemed like every issue had a letter from him, Vartanoff and/or Lillian III. I remember being very impressed with their comments and they made me look at the stories differently.

I, too, began to look at comics differently thanks to them. PS: Bob Rozakis and Peter Sanderson also come to mind.

I've been reading the Dark Horse Collected Archives of old Warren Magazines, Creepy and Eerie, of late and get a big kick from seeing future pros and their letters of comment and submitted fan artwork. Lots of amateur art from folks like Bernie Wrightson, Jim Starlin, Frank Brunner and others

... if you named your pet Streaky, Ace or any of the Super-Pet names.
... if Kimota means anything to you.
... if you first learned about Greek, Roman and Norse mythology prior to reading any text books.

...You buy a back issue but when you go to file it in a long box, you discover that you already have 2 copies of that issue. I have done that a few times in my life and I get frustrated that I have an extra copy to get rid of because I was trying to expand my Fantastic Four Collection.

I remember Olav Beemer and Augie something (Who I know had a blog for a while) I used to be something of a letterhack in the early 90s myself, and I knew Olav Beemer; he and I were regular contributors to an apazine called Rainbow Bridge. Another member was another guy whose name might be familiar, my mate Andy Oliver, who now edits Broken Frontier.com. I still remember the thrill of getting my first ever letter published. I'd written in to Excalibur, complaining that they were neglecting Captain Britain lately. The editor responded with an assurance that CB would be heavily featured in the very next issue, and he was! They took away his powers, and he wasn't seen again for a year and a half...

...if you believe every specific cover or panel you want to reference in a discussion should be easily findable on the internet. I thought of this yesterday when I made a comment in the Captain America thread about how the Wasp made a comment about how handsome Kang probably was under his costume. I went to look for the panel (from Avengers #8) and found it in a matter of seconds. BUT I CAN'T FIND A SINGLE PANEL OF THE TIGER WOMEN OF WILDMOON MOUNTAIN!
