Comixology is offering their own Unlimited service for $5.99 a month allowing unlimited reading access to a number of Indy publisher...IDW, Image, Archie, Dark Horse and Valiant among them. Marvel has their own Unlimited service, so is not par tof this and DC remains the only top American publisher now to not offer a subscription based reading model. CBR storyinterview with Comixology CEO on CBRThey seem to be offering a free 30 day trial offer as well. I think the subscription based reading service is a positive step forward to moving comics themselves (as opposed to comics properties in other mediums) into the 21st century as an entertainment medium that works with the way the mass mainstream audience acquires and consumes media entertainment. (And I purposely said comics rather than comic books) -M

I saw this. I'm fairly intrigued. Most of the stuff I'm getting now in trade is from Image. DC and Marvel are putting out little to nothing that I'm interested in. May give it a try for the free 30 days and see what I think.

And the more I'm looking at it...the more limited it is. It's really more of a sampler thing. A few issues here and there...an early arc. Probably not deep enough to be worth it to me.

I haven't looked in depth at it yet. I already have Marvel Unlimited, so I am going to need to be impressed to pony up money for another sub service (I already let Thrillbent go a while back), but I might check out the 30 day free trial just to see. But it's babysteps in the right direction...maybe. -M

And I'm not overly interested in most of their newer stuff. Whereas I'm buying a ton of Image trades. I looked particularly at Archie on the Comixology and the pickings were might slim.

No Marvel or DC on Comixology Unlimited, but there's lots of good stuff.
Like Trevor posted in the Bargain Hunters thread, it wouldn't be for him (or me) as we have thousands of copies we haven't read yet, but, it would be perfect for my son, who's a casual reader.
Here's some items I've bought and enjoyed that are on the plan :
Image - Alex & Ada, Bitch Planet, Black Science, C.O.W.L., Deadly Class, Descender, East of West, Elephantmen, Fatale, Five Ghosts, Girls, Glory, the Manhattan Projects, Morning Glories, Prophet, Savage Dragon, Sex Criminals, Skull Kickers, Strange Girl, The Strange Talent of Luther Strode, Stray Bullets, and Velvet.
That's a lot of good reading !
The question is : After you've read it, would you go back and buy it again ? Maybe this time in the deluxe edition if you really liked it. I'm sure the selection will rotate too, like Netflix, and it's only a matter of time before DC catches up some how, some way.

I would have been much more impressed if this included Marvel and DC, or was limited to independent publishers but allowed you access to more of their catalog. I would have been happy with access to their entire back catalog + delayed release of current issues (like Marvel Unlimited), or a limited time access to the most recent issues from currently ongoing series (like Hulu, which lets you view the five most recent episodes of a current airing TV show).

I'm really going to look into this. I never buy independents other than Savage Dragon. 6 bucks a month isn't bad.

Apparently there is a bit of a backlash over this among the creative community, as royalty rights for this type of model were never discussed/negotiated with the creators and several creator-owned properties were included without getting the consent of the owners. Some publishers gave creators opt in/opt out opportunities, others didn't and some creators are looking to get their books taken out of the program because they never agreed to be included in it.

I can't believe , in this day and age, that all this wasn't negotiated before launching the subscription.

I tried the Marvel Unlimited sub when they ran the 30 cents for 30 days promo about a year or so ago...my problem was that I'm pretty much completely ignorant when it comes to new comic material.
98% of the free, new stuff that they had to offer never really elevated beyond mediocre IMO. But like I said, I wouldn't even know where to start with the new free stuff that they have to offer.
Most of the stuff I was interested in was at least $2.99 for the newest issue anyway. So I figured "what's the point?" and just cancelled after the initial month and went back to the few new titles I wanted, in floppy format.

^^^^^
The majority of what I read on Marvel Unlimited is Golden age and Silver Age material that is pricey whether I am buying back issues or trades, so just to read that material alone is cost efficient. I've also read/reread some stuff I either got rid of or never got in floppy format form the 90s-present (filled in the issues I was missing of the Priest run of Panther and Bendis Daredevil for instance when I read those runs, read part of the the Heroes Return Thor, etc.) As for the new stuff itself, birth my wife and I check out the new Star Wars material and we are checking out a lot of the old Star Wars stuff from DH I missed too, so we are getting our money's worth out of it before the new Marvel Universe material is taken into consideration. I do sample some of he new series that interest me, but that's not the main reason I have the service. My annual sub ends in June, and we already discussed and decided to renew-it's $70/year so works out to $5.83 a month, which is less than the Comixology monthly fee, and I get far more choice and access from Marvel than I would through Comixology even though they offer multiple publishers. So I have no qualms about the Marvel service, but given the limited selection and the squabble over creator participation on titles they own with the Comixology service, I am not yet convinced I should give it a try. If they get the creator issues squared away and broaden what is offered, I could see myself giving it a try, but until then, I am in wait and see mode.

I've fallen away from current Marvel over the last 20 years or so, and most of what's going on currently I get from reading Previews. Marvel is not the be-all-end-all of comics. They are the biggest, but not necessarily the best. Image, Dark Horse, IDW, Boom, and many of the indies, are refreshing in that they don't have years of continuity, but have real solid stories to tell. I've been reading, and collecting, for over 40 years, and even though I have thousands of issues, both digital and paper, am considering taking an Unlimited subscription myself, to see what's worth buying into, or not. For the cost of a couple of issues a month, you get to sample hundreds of different titles / month. I think it's a great model to get behind. Of course, being a long-time collector reader, I'd love to see Marvel & DC in the mix. I think it's inevitable that a model evolves with at least DC being represented.

I'm thinking about trying this out. There are numerous Image and Dark Horse series that I'm interested in and would be more likely to read if I had unlimited access for a flat monthly fee as opposed to taking the risk of buying the overpriced single issues. I have Marvel Unlimited and use it fairly regularly, so I don't care if Marvel joins in this. Unless Marvel allows access to the same library as Unlimited, I don't think it would be worth it. DC, however, really needs to get with the times. As a matter of fact I only read the Star Wars books because they're on Unlimited. Those are probably the best books Marvel is producing at the moment and even those can't persuade me to buy at cover price. If Marvel and DC would allow for DRM-free downloads, I'd be far more likely to buy individual issues. As it stands, it's all Image, IDW and Oni for me.

I have MU and am satisfied with what it offers. My only beef is that it is a slow download at times. I'll hold off the comixology sub for now, but 5.99 a month is very inexpensive. What other kind of entertainment can you get for 20 cents a day?
