I'm just curious , I almost posted the cover below for the subject of horses this last week. I'm wondering if anyone would have considered voting for it , or is it too "out off the Box" ?

Based on how we vote on recent contests, why the hell not? It doesn't make less sense then some winner entries.

They aren't actually horses though, are they?

Still way more interesting then the ones on the winning entry. I would have had no problem voting for those.

I think a variety is nice. And I like plays on the criteria, like pip's use of the slang horse for heroin. But there's seems to be a formula for winning if you look at the winners in the sticky thread. So I guess you can post "off the wall" entries but they don't seem to be the ones that win.

To me, it's too bizarre for me to vote on and I wouldn't consider it because of my first impression - bizarre. Sorry Everyone, I would not vote it. At my age, I just can't handle bizarre/weird covers for us to vote on.

They're being ridden as horses, in a traditional horsey pose. So the idea of 'horse' is present. So yeah, I'd say it's eligible.

Sure, I would have considered it. An interesting take on the horse theme. "Out of the box" stuff is cool with me, and adds to the variety.

I would not have considered voting for it, not because of the "horse" question but because it didn't jump out at me. As for it being worthy of inclusion, as Arthur Gordon Scratch mentioned, the rules are pretty loose when it comes to determining if a cover fits the criteria or not, so I don't think you would have been completely out of place.
As well, I agree with adamwarlock2099 in that there seems to be a formula for winning or being competitive in the contest. Matt Baker covers invariably get high numbers of votes, and while I mean no disrespect to you, icctrombone, as you are one of my favorite posters on this board, your cover this week, while beautiful, did not focus on the horses at all, so while it technically fit the criteria, was the win about the horses or about it being a Matt Baker cover?
Also, Marvel covers rarely win. In the first two years of the contest, only 18 Marvel covers have won out of 104 or so contests, accounting for just 17% of the wins. For a company that has such iconic characters and creators as well as such as rich history, that percentage seems to be pretty low.
Romance covers, regardless of the theme, seem to have been picking up a lot of wins, particularly in the past year, although I don't have specific numbers to support that point.

Well, my stunningly beautiful Matt Baker Lorna Doone cover garnered not one vote...not a single one...not a single measly...not that I'm bitter, mind you But just goes to show even Matt's not a slam dunk. Icc, fwiw I certainly would have looked twice at that Swamp Thing cover (as I did for pip's similarly selection, for example) and yes, I may have added it to my lonnng list of "contenders." Not saying I would've voted for it, but I like being exposed to a wide variety of covers.

I don't know if it's maybe a specific artist, genre or publisher, so much as an era. Modern (whether it be specifically from the Modern Age or comics close to 10 years old) comics don't seem to win. That seems to be the biggest commonality without researching the sticky thread. Which is not a surprise with a forum dedicated to classic comics. Pre 1980 seems to always be a contender. So what is popular with most readers, as long as those covers fit the criteria to the voter, is usually going to be a winner, even if it is just that voters like that particular cover for reasons outside the criteria. But that's not something you can ask someone not to do. We like what we like. But the majority of participants do seem to like a lot of the same covers.

It's all random and impulse choices, innocent fun : sometimes I get zero likes and 2 votes, this last one I get 5 likes and zero votes with a classic Kaluta cover, there's no point in trying to rationalize a winning method, just post your horse-like monsters cover and have fun with the reactions

I will always favor two factors when voting : design and originality towards the topic. So if I had been online while the voting took place, I'd definitively would have gone with thewhite horse smack one. Whether the cover is from 1936 or 2006 should be irrelevant.

A perfectly valid and interesting entry, but part of the criteria I personally use is how well it exemplifies the theme, and since none of those mounts appears to be an actual horse, it would have not have gotten my vote.

I would've voted for it as they appear as steeds, or, supernatural horses.
