I thought there was already a thread for this but I didn't see it after a quick look so I figured I might as well start one, since I've been wondering about a few things I've come across recently. I was in the bookstore today and saw This Damned Band by Paul Cornell and Tony Parker. As a guy in his 50s, the pop-musical era it covers is more interesting to me than that in Gillen and McKelvie series like Phonograph or the Wicked + the Divine, but of course that doesn't mean the book itself will be a better read. I haven't read anything much by Cornell. The artwork didn't jump out at me, in either a good or bad way. Anyone familiar with Russian artist Artyom Trakhanov's work? I came across some samples of while looking for something else online, forget what it was now. Series he's worked on include Undertow, Madblade, and a new one called Turncoat, none of which I've read. I'm pretty blown away by what I've seen of his art so far and might have to try something just because of it alone.

I've read a few things by Cornell and they were solid but not really spectacular. I first encountered him as a novelist though, doing Dr. Who novels before the BBC revived Doctor Who a decade or so ago. He did some work for Marvel and DC ( I recall Captain Briatian and the MI13 for Marvel which I enjoyed the handful of issues I sampled and I think Demon Knights and Stormwatch for the new52 launch, again both interesting but not spectacular and neither had an artist that sealed the deal for me, and had a creator-owned thing at Vertigo about UFOlogy called Saucer Country that I only sampled the first issue of, and again, it was solid stuff but not spectacular, so I didn't pick up the rest. I do like his prose work a bit better than his comics stuff, but he always seems to be paired with competent but not necessarily interesting artists on the projects I have seen from him. Of course I could be misremembering which titles he worked on...

I really think Cornell is average at best, but that cover you posted is quite the eye candy! I wouldn't mind if you posted more exemples, including some storytelling pages

I liked Cornells Action (until he got caught up in a lame cross-over at the end), Knight & Squire, Demon Knights and Doctor Who TV episodes, off the top of my head.

I'm a fan of Paul Cornell. Really liked his Captain Britain and MI13 series as well as Doctor Who: The Four Doctors mini-series he did recently, and the two Doctor Who episodes he wrote in the Tennant years were possibly the best ones since the relaunch of the franchise.

I knew dupersuper would beat me to it, but yeah, I liked his Action run.
Unfortunately, Demon Knights was the biggest letdown of the New 52 for me.
I've heard very good things about the run he had on Captain Britian and MI-13.
Thanks for pointing this guy's work out, berkley. His stuff has a Toth / Paul Pope feel to it.

I was wondering about that TA Hulk too. I like Frank Cho's art on superhero books but was a bit disappointed upon hearing this was to be his next series as I'm not really a fan of the various Hulks. What other regular characters appear in it, if any? if the supporting cast sounded interesting I might give it a chance anyway.

The main supporting character is his annoying sister. I don't think any of the regular Hulk supporting cast have made an appearance, at least in the three issues I read.

I was thinking there might be some other characters I knew - like other heroes or villains who don't have their own series, that kind of thing. Came across another few artists who are new to me and I wondered if anyone knew much about them. One of them, Vanesa del Rey, drew the first issue of the current Scarlet Witch series and mrp kindly recommended a crime series called Hit that she drew for Boom. Sample page: While searching for info about del Rey, I came across current artist I hadn't heard of before, Jillian Tamaki. Her stuff looks reall good as well - anyone read anything of hers? Not everything is as lush and detailed as the full-page panel below but everything I've seen has been impressive.
