Due to much crying on the part of certain members here, I am going to play with new banners for the site a bit over the next few days. I'm still likely to go back to Thor, but do feel free to chime in with your thoughts. If we can agree on something that is generally liked more than Thor, and also fits the following criteria, we'll keep it:
The Criteria:
1. Immediately communicates a retro-comics feel 2. Looks good at any resolution. Nothing gets cut off or centered weirdly. 3. Has an easily identifiable icon with which visitors can associate the site. 4. A character (or characters) that isn't particularly controversial -- there aren't masses of fans out there who actively dislike the character.
Also Preferable:
5. Visually simple. Doesn't demand too much attention once you get immersed in the conversations below. 6. Features a character NO other comics site is going to use (so that we stand out), yet is a character every comic fan knows. 7. Colors match the look of the forum 8. Easily distinguishable and pleasing art that isn't going to make anyone wince.
Thursday's banner: Cockrum's X-Men
Do we...
A) Like this banner much better. Keep it. B) Like it better than Thor, but still see its limitations. Something else is needed. C) Like it the same. D) Want Thor back. E) Think they're both crap.

Nice banner. Very nice banner Glad you approve. It's one of my favorite classic comics images, and it displays well on just about every resolution, but I do have my concerns with it: 1. It's very busy, thus drawing too much attention to it. Could be distracting to users. 2. It lacks a single, easily identifiable icon with which people can easily associate the site. 3. There's just no way to get Storm's face in the shot. 4. It doesn't pick up the site's dark blue color theme. The mismatch bugs me a bit, but I don't want to change the site's colors to go with the banner.

Disturbing connotation that DC has done to Batman's birthday what the Catholic Church has done to Jesus'

But seriously, offer some more thoughts, folks.
I'll throw a new banner up for tomorrow, and we can discuss that one too.
Time permitting, I'll put a new one up each day for at least the next few days, unless we find a new favorite before then.

I made a few banners that I thought a few people liked, too bad we couldn't all come up with a banner and then implement some sort of voting system...could be fun.

I honestly dont care - it's a pig of shape (or a rectangle) to fit a comic panel into so whatever can be jammed in there is fine.
Plus it's your site (if you know what i mean) so you should be allowed to choose whatever you like and the rest of us can deal with it. x-men, thor, batman, fin fang foom - it's all comics, it's all good

I made a few banners that I thought a few people liked I still have yours and have been toying with them. I'm considering throwing two of them up over the course of the next few days. Essentially, though, isn't that exactly what we're doing here? I'm not tallying numbers, per se, but I am asking for input. Again, the reason I originally stuck with Thor was that it satisfied the following criteria: 1. Immediately communicates a retro-comics feel 2. Visually simple. Doesn't demand too much attention once you get immersed in the conversations below. 3. Looks good at any resolution. Nothing gets cut off or centered weirdly. 4. Has an easily identifiable icon with which visitors can associate the site. 5. Features a character NO other comics site is going to use, yet is a character every comic fan knows. Essentially, we stand out visually. 6. Colors match the look of the forum 7. Easily distinguishable Kirby art. Even if you don't care about Thor, who dislikes Kirby? 8. As much as most of us aren't die-hard fans of "Goldilocks," there are very few people out there who actively DON'T like Thor, either. If we can find a banner that most folks here like, and it manages to satisfy most of these criteria, I'm fine with switching to it.

Sometimes, I think I know what's better for the site than others do, but I never want to cater to my own personal whims. As much as I've had to spend a lot of time in the spotlight as administrator here as of late, my goal has always been (and remains) to eventually get to duck back and just be a regular user here again. The day everyone here starts catering to me and backing down against me in debates because it's MY board is the day I will no longer enjoy being a part of this community. Frankly, I've been worried as of late that no one's going to call me out on stuff anymore in my review threads. People, I know just as little about what I'm talking about as I did three months ago!

thats very true but you absolutely no-one is going to agree on a banner - you know what its like - and it doesnt seem fair for you to have to go through all the hassle of trialing out different ones to meet all of our "tastes".
you have to be allowed a lil perk for doing so much work
the less work for you, the better for me.

I think we should stick with Thor.
For all the reasons you listed earlier.
He's never been my favorite but whenever I come across Kirby Thor stories I've never seen, I'm very impressed. It's definitely among the best comics of the Silver Age, and the best Thor ever. Yeah, Walt Simonson's pretty good, but get real.

Maybe we really will find something people like better, or maybe we'll suddenly hear from a bunch of folks who actually LIKED the Thor banner (only detractors have spoken out thus far) Meh. I'm volunteering to do the work. It's all good. My perk is having this community endure. The flare ups have settled down, my review threads are nearly all moved over, other folks are beginning to bring back their old review threads and content -- I'm absolutely getting what I want. Appreciated. Eventually, I'm going to have to step away and get back my life, but I'm pretty happy with the way things are going right now.

I like the X-Men one, but I agree it cuts off some things, like most of Storm & the top of Phoenix's head. But that cover's always been a favorite. I'm ok with Thor, or if you want to rotate them every so often for variety (though I know that detracts from the identity you're trying to create).
