This is an awesome cover. And maybe an homage to this one...

Hal, you are the eagle eye of the forum. That might be the Hulk in that shadow.

I see what you mean. But anytime they'd have a crossover they advertised the heck out of it. There's no way it would be a surprise. If I remember correctly, it was the Nova villain The Sphinx.

I believe it was the Sphinx, you are correct. tho i recall a similar "DMan" cover where they were pretending the guest star was Wolverine as well.

This book had a reprint of FF # 101. I'm so glad that Jim Shooter came along and stopped creators sliding in reprints when they missed their deadlines. Oh wow that would be misleading - I don't know much about that era of FF, does that cover actually relate to anything, or is it just completely random? It sure seems like it should have a story attached to it!

The characters on the cover were part of a temporary storyline that was running in the previous 5 issues or so. All I could think of was that the cover was drawn first and they fell behind in producing the issue. Thus the reprint.

I think back in those days the cover art had to be at the printers before the interior artwork had to be there. So the covers were already printed before it was known that the interior art would be late and a reprint had to be substituted.

Unfortunately a lot of new comics have a cover that is more like a poster & could be on any issue. There is no clue as to what the story inside is about.

For a while in the '70s Gil Kane would draw a vast number of covers for Marvel. It was always a bummer for me to buy a comic with a dynamic Kane cover and find some Frank Robbins / Vince Colletta art inside.

I had just discovered the Marvel Universe in 1972 and so when they reprinted something because of a missed deadline the reprint was just as interesting to me because I had never read it before and it helped me connect the dots of the Marvel characters.
I remember buying Conan 22 which reprinted Conan 1. This was great for me because I had missed Conan 1 when it came out and that first issue was already too expensive for me to afford even then.

Hal, you are the eagle eye of the forum. That might be the Hulk in that shadow. Thank you! You know, I never thought of that. Maybe the Hulk did "inspire" the Blockbuster. Blockbuster was a scientist whose experiment went awry, and whose brother was the only one who could control him Like Banner, he became strong, but also became essentially non compos mentis. Unlike Rick Jones, though, Roland Desmond used his brother Mark to commit crime. Bit of a different wrinkle there. Another different wrinkle was that it Bruce Wayne -- not Batman -- could also exert influence over Blockbuster. Check out the other famous Blockbuster cover, which if it is not a literal swipe of a Hulk cover, is certainly reminiscent of the kind of thing the Hulk would do. This is the August 1967 issue. And look what came out the next summer. I don't think it's a swipe, really, but the crumbling logo is kind of an interesting coincidence.
