Most of the favorite characters that dominate comics today were created back in the 40's or the 60's. However there are some gems that some of us love that were created later.
Some of mine are DC's Firestorm & Booster Gold. Marvel's Moon Knight. Valiant's XO Manowar. Nexus. Prime. Majestic.

Yeah, like Slam_Bradley said, too many to list them all really, but a few that come to mind:
The Love and Rockets characters - not only Maggie and Hopey, but so many of the supporting characters like Penny Century, Izzy, Ray, Terry ... and even some of the less prominent ones like Daffy. On Gilbert's side, there's Gorgo, Maria, Maria's daughters Fritz and Petra, Petra's young daughter Venus ... and that's not even getting into the Palomar characters.
Daniel Clowes's Lloyd Lewellyn
Marvel characters like Gerber's Howard the Duck, Omega, Man-Thing and his supporting cast (Jennifer kale, Dakimh, Korrek, etc) Englehart's Mantis, Moondragon, the Eternals - Thena, the Reject, and Karkas in particular; then there's the entire MoKF cast, several characters from Wolfman's and Colan's ToD, ...
At DC it would be the Kirby characters like the Demon and OMAC, and the New Gods - Orion and Barda in particular, ...
Alan Moore's Promethea, various characters from Watchmen, etc, etc, ...

Sorry Hondo, but Conan didn't debut in the 70s-present, not even in comics. Thirties for his debut in Weird Tales, but 1952 for his debut in comics, Mexican comics, but still comics long before the 70s. -M

Aww, c'mon mrp-give the guy a break. Yeah, I knew about Conan's early appearances and I think there was an American comics pastiche in the mid-1950s. But yeesh-your just showing off
