Very much enjoying this thread, dedicated to a concept I didn't much care for -- despite Bob Haney's involvement -- for may reaosns already mentioned. However, I wa surprised ot find when I was strolling through the second of the Challengers of the Unknown DC Showcases that the back-up story in #35 (Dec '63/Jan '64) was called "Sons of the Challengers." (Why no blurb on the cover, I wonder.) It features a glimpse into their future courtesy Madame Zaddum's crystal ball as a reward for saving her life when there's trouble in Fun-Land, an amusement park. Anyhow, don't want to ruin the story unless you want me to, but the point is that the Challs, a.k.a. "The Legion of Death-Cheaters," get to see their offspring in action. The younger Challs have a headquraters a la Challenger Mountain, are spoiling for action and find it when they fight the Fishmen. They're not as wise-assy as the Super-Sons, but then, this was 1963, after all. Though the reader is asked in the final panel if he/she would like to see them again, I'm pretty sure they never reappeared. (Surely Geoff Johns could have put them in a pocket playpen in Infinite Crisis.)

This time they even rate a mention on the cover--as "The Challenger Kids" ! It seems a no-brainer that comics would capitalize on the youth movement (and its market) and try to come up with more teen protagonists during this time.

I will dig out my book and check it out. Plus I can now use the group the next time I need a "C" entry for the name game!

"Evil in Paradise" The story starts with an airplane discovering an island between South America & Antarctica that has a primitive tribe living in a tropical land surrounded by frozen mountains. Clark Jr & Bruce Jr are in the audience where two anthropologists argue that man is mostly good (Forbes) or mostly evil (Benson). Clark Jr agrees with Forbes & Bruce Jr agrees with Benson. They decide to join the expedition going to the island to study the tribe's behaviors. They go as Superman Jr & Batman Jr to help out. However Benson uses sonic equipment to "irritate" the tribe. Superman Jr discovers the sonics & destroys them. Benson then tries to create a food shortage to stress the tribe. However the tribe shares their food with each other so Benson gets Batman Jr to kidnap the leader of the tribe - Oonak. Superman Jt intervenes but Benson manages to get away with Oonak. Benson uses contrived circumstances to try & brainwash Oonak before returning him to the tribe. However Oonak treats his tribe with kindness & Benson is furious that Oonak fought off Benson's brainwashing & Benson attacks Oonak. Benson is pushed into thermal springs & dies. Batman Jr is angry because Oonak pushed Benson. Superman Jr arrives with Forbes when the last of Benson's experiments go off - explosions to destroy the springs that keep the inner island climate warm. Oonak saves Batman Jr dying in the process. Superman Jr states modern science & machinery will restore the island to it's tropical climate & Batman Jr mourns the death of Oonak.

As with prior stories it's not as bad because the fathers don't appear & we avoid the stupid conflicts between the dads & sons. And as usual the sons are totally incompetent. Two people die & Batman Jr actually helps Benson cheat on the experiment.

Why didn't the adult heroes arrest Bruce Jr for abetting in kidnap and torture?

Why didn't the adult heroes arrest Bruce Jr for abetting in kidnap and torture? The only answer I can give you: there are different laws on Earth Haney.
One thing I am learning from my thread (& shaxper's Teen Titans thread) is Haney was really bad at writing teens. I don't think he was that bad of a writer because I re read some of his Brave & Bold stuff & I still enjoy it.
I may even throw in an issue of Brave & Bold to review because I feel like I bash Haney every issue in this thread...

I was ten years old when this story came out, and the clearly evil actions which Batman Jr was allowed to engage in creeped me out even then. Btw, for those who've not seen it, I once did a timeline for this continuity: blaklion.best.vwh.net/timelineE.html

I attempted to do the next story today but it has the Dads & Sons interacting at a camp so it was really bad...I will do it soon.

The Shocking Switch of the Super Sons Clark Jr goes into a collapsing building to rescue a stranded dog while his dad rescues the people. His dad lectures him about possibly revealing his secret ID. Then Bruce Jr stops his dad from being shot & gets a similar lecture. When the sons get together to complain about their dads they see a poster about an "encounter camp" where they can get their relationships fixed. The dads & the sons go. The leader of the camp has them scream, laugh, & dance to "break down barriers". Then they are interrupted by the local sheriff who states something with the strength of 10 men is destroying things in the area. Later the dads & sons split up to investigate & are captured by the government. The government tells them a train with nerve gas will be going thru the area & may be attacked by an agent named Bio-X7. The agent was killed & operated on. He still has his human brain but the rest of him is synthetic. However his nuclear power pack is malfunctioning causing him to have weird thoughts (maybe he read this story!). The dads & sons agree to help guard the train & return to camp. At the camp the leader tells the dads to "switch" sons. At first the experiment goes well but within hours the sons irritate their "new" dads. The dads & sons go to the leader to quit the experiment & he reveals that was his intention. He says by "switching" they would appreciate their own dad/son. Wow. Brilliant! Anyway the dads & sons figure out the reclusive Mr Bell at camp may be Bio-X7 (Batman the World's Greatest Detective? Not in this story). The dads & sons are too late to prevent Bell from releasing the fatal gas but Bell then inhales all the gas & dies. Then Superman lies to the town about what happened. And the dads & sons leave the camp laughing..."It was a cool trip. It was a "gas" man...ha, ha, ha".

Another bad story based on the conflict between the dads & sons. The camp dynamics were terrible. The plot was dumb. Both dads & sons were totally incompetent. And callous. The laughing in the last panel was just too much. Hey a guy died because we were total idiots ha ha...
The reprints in this issue were so much better than this new story.
