After not caring for the first issue of the 10th Doctor comic I never looked back, but the WWI cover looked neat and I love the Weeping Angels so I decided to pull the trigger and I'm glad I did as the story was fantastic. How are the other titles? The 10th Doctor #6 is the best of the Titan issues IMO. Just as good as the Doctor Who Magazine strips. DWM #481 starts a new comic story that is very similar so you might be interested in checking that out if you haven't already. Were the 11th and 12th doctor issues any good? If so are they in the middle of a story or could one just jump on? I liked the first issue of the 11th but I feel like the following issues weren't as good, although some certainly have their moments. The first issue ends with a mystery that is lightly peppered in throughout the series. Also the 11th series has introduced three companions and it's only on issue #7. So I think it's something that probably should be read in it's entirety. But if you didn't enjoy the first issue it doesn't really get better. Although issue #3 is probably my favorite solely for the "guest appearance". I think the 12th series actually captures the voice of Capaldi's Doctor quite well. The first two issues are a two part story that ends with a villain we may or may not see again later. The third and fourth issues are part of an ongoing story arc and are a bit better quality than the first two issues. You might be better off just starting with issue #3. those strips at the end are legitimately bad. I think some of them are actually quite funny.

I realized today while flipping through the sixth issue of Tenth that the Eleventh was keeping me from enjoying it, so I think that's a good reason to drop it.
Jesse, would you say the Eleventh is the weakest of the lot? I do enjoy the DWM strips and wish they'd release it like Batman '66.

Jesse, would you say the Eleventh is the weakest of the lot? Initially I would have said the 10th series was the weakest despite the fact that I enjoy the series. It wasn't until issue #5 that I actually started to like Gabby though. Issue #6 is probably the best things Titan has done so far. For me the 11th series is all about the companions. Alice was immediately endearing to me. With John Jones we know what he will become so I'm interested in how he will get there. Plus I'm interested in the mystery set up at the end of the first issue. I can see the series not resonating with people if they weren't interested in the companions. It's probably the weakest version of The Doctor though and doesn't capture Matt Smith's voice as well as the other books do their respective Doctors. If I were to rank the best of what Titan has done so far I would recommend - 10th Doctor #6
- 12th Doctor #3 and #4
- 11th Doctor #1
- 10th Doctor #1-3
I do enjoy the DWM strips and wish they'd release it like Batman '66. Apparently the strips sometimes get collected in TPBs but I rarely ever see solicitations and am not sure where to look for them.

I just finished 10th Doctor #7 and again it was really great...although at times Ten sounded more like the Fourth Doctor.

Speaking of the Fourth Doctor I finished watching Season 14 over the last several weeks and really enjoyed it.
"The Masque of Mandragora" was a pretty good start to the season. A proper period piece with an interesting alien threat, some swashbuckling and evil cult with creepy masks. Hieronymous looked particularly menacing in his purple robes and grotesque golden mask. The scene where he takes off his mask to reveal that he has become Helix energy was a cool visual. We also get a walk around the TARDIS interior and visit the secondary control room. I got a kick out of Sarah Jane picking up the Second Doctor's recorder and playing it.
"The Hand of Fear" is Sarah Jane Smith's final story as a regular companion. I liked the special effects makeup and costume design of Eldrad's female form. The Kastria sets weren't too bad either. Not a fan of the TARDIS console though. Elisabeth Sladen and Tom Baker's last words to each other were kind of touching and I liked how they ended on a joke.
"The Deadly Assassin" is the first appearance of The Master after Roger Delgado's death a few years earlier. Here The Master is decrepit and very much in need of a new regeneration. While the special effects makeup isn't great and looks a bit cheap it's still very creepy. I always like seeing more of Gallifrey and this episode is full of stuffy old Timelords. It also introduces several aspects of Time Lord society like the Matrix, Rassilon and the Eye of Harmony, the twelve regeneration limit and their trademark robes with the large collar and skull caps. It's also notable for being one of the few episodes in the series that doesn't feature a companion. The Doctor is at his best when trying to survive Goth's assault in the Matrix and the final showdown against the Master is pretty epic.
"The Face of Evil" introduces Leela as a regular companion. I laughed when Tom Baker was surrounded and he bluffs "Now drop your weapons or I'll kill him with this deadly jelly baby." I thought it interesting that the villain Xoanon was a super computer with split personalities one of which was based on the Doctor himself. I love that after The Doctor refuses her Leela just runs into the TARDIS, pushes a random button and the TARDIS dematerializes.
"The Robots of Death" I quite liked this serial and the setting reminded me a bit of Dune which apparently was intentional. Thought the design of the Voc robots was creepy and the sets looked pretty good as well. The story itself is an interesting 'whodunit' in the style of Agatha Christie. D84 telling Leela "Please do not throw hands at me" made me laugh. He was one of the better robots in the series and it's a shame he couldn't stick around as a companion.
"The Talons of Weng-Chiang" An excellent period piece set in Victorian London and one of the most popular stories of the entire series. For a six part serial it doesn't drag one bit and the atmosphere is eerie throughout. It introduces the characters Jago and Litefoot who would go on to star in their own audio series. I genuinely found them to be very likable. The giant sewer rats are menacing and the design of Mr Sin the Peking Homunculus was pretty creepy. The scene where Leela begins eating with her bare hands and Professor Litefoot joins in always makes me laugh. Leela also gets some decent action scenes even jumping out a glass window at one point. Michael Spice is quite good as the villain Magnus Greel. The final showdown was suspenseful and the resolution very satisfying.

Panini Comics collects them in a series called Doctor Who Graphic Novels. I don't buy them myself because I subscribe to Doctor Who Magazine, but they are readily available in comic shops here in Australia. I imagine any comic shop in the US would be able to get them in. You can check out the series on Comic Vine here: www.comicvine.com/doctor-who-graphic-novel/4050-46373/

One of my favorite DW comic strips I highly recommend it.

So, I'm completely addicted to Doctor Who now, and just for good measure, I've told my nine-year old that she can start watching it with me when I get into the Matt Smith seasons. She was super excited about that.
I may not have gotten a son to share my hobbies and interests with, but my older girl is turning into just as much of a geek as I am and I love it!

Man, that initial Doctor Who "rush" is like nothing else. In addition to all the current seasons, I also bought probably a dozen novels, that big short story collection and two mini 10th Doctor omnibuses in the first couple months.

I recently read Doctor Who: Voyager and really enjoyed it. The graphic novel collects strips from Doctor Who Magazine #88-99 and features the Sixth Doctor. The Steve Parkhouse story is interesting and John Ridgway's artwork is excellent. Not sure but this may be the first time in continuity that Frobisher shape shifts into the form of a penguin. I checked out the Abslom Daak: Dalek Killer graphic novel mostly due to the character becoming part of the TV continuity with the season 8 episode "Time Heist". This volume contains multiple action packed stories including the Seventh Doctor story "Nemesis of the Daleks" which I highly recommend.

That run of sixth Doctor stories was great! I remember reading them in DW Magazine. If only the show could have been as good...
