It's funny how the norm of the Tardis crew has changed over time. There are long periods of time when the norm has been one companion, usually a woman from the time period that the show is being broadcast. But then the periods of multiple companions, like I think the entire stint of the first two Doctors. And I believe the entire period from Leela to Turlough had at least one companion who wasn't from Earth.

After Ian and Barbara left in 1965, there were two companions(Steven, with Vicki, who left as Katarina joined, then, after both Katarina and single-story 'companion' Sara Kingdom were killed off, Dodo joined). Polly and Ben took over from Dodo, and then Jamie was a somewhat last-minute addition. After Polly and Ben left, the Second Doctor had two companions, with Victoria, and then Zoe. John Nathan-Turner wanted to recreate the Hartnell-era 'vibe' by adding Nyssa to 'Logopolis' as Tegan also joined.

I like Second Doctor episodes with Jamie plus Victoria or Zoe (moreso Zoe because more of those episodes are intact). I was reading that the plan was actually to write Nyssa out shortly after she joined the Tardis, but Davison convinced them to change course because he felt Nyssa was a good fit. It seems that's why she stays in the Tardis for most of Kinda. The story was written based on the plan for her to be written out, so they decided to come up with an excuse for why she wasn't around instead of totally rewriting the script to put her in it throughout.

Kinda was submitted during season 18, before Nyssa was introduced. The 'fainting spell' that struck her at the end of 'Four to Doomsday',and her brief scenes in 'Kinda', were added to explain her absence(I think they also considered having her stay aboard the ship in 'Doomsday', which essentially was an idea they put aside til they had another opportunity to write her out, in Terminus).
