She has been nothing but irritating since her first appearance. I was really hoping we'd seen the last of Professor Mary Sue.

Somewhat, but for some reason I was able to tolerate it until her last appearance. Not sure what it was about that that tipped it over the edge for me.

I've never got the River hate.

I've never got the River hate. Me either, I always thought she was fun. Now, I wasn't necessarily into her being Rory and Amy's daughter( I preferred her to just be an awesome space explorer) but the actress was great so I could easily get past that.

I'm continuing to watch New Who in order. I just finished "The Poison Sky", the second part of the Sontaran/UNIT two-parter where Martha Jones comes back. Donna Noble is a real change from Rose Tyler or Martha Jones. I thought I'd find her grating based on the Christmas episode she did the prior season, but it's actually turning out to be an interesting change in the dynamic. She has a very well-defined dynamic with The Doctor from the get-go.
I loved The Fires of Pompeii. The historical episodes are usually pretty good. I'd like to see a balance with more of those episodes.

I liked River, and she was a match for the Doctor both intellectually as well as being a little more compatible with him as a romantic partner than any of the companions I've seen. For my progress, my daughter and I watched the next-to-last Matt Smith episode ("Nightmare in Silver", written by Neil Gaiman) last night. She's a little bummed out because this is "her" Doctor (I started with the 10th Doctor, but we've been watching these ones together), but we're both excited to get into the 12th Doctor here shortly.

I just find River incredibly annoying, especially that she can apparently do absolutely everything the Doctor can do, only better. She can fly the TARDIS better than him? Really??! Plus that she apparently knows absolutely everything that is going to happen before it does, and just sits there with a smug smile saying "Spoilers". Where's the dramatic tension if nothing is a surprise? Maybe its just 'cause I'm old curmudgeon who grew up watching classic Doctor Who. I'll just sit here in the corner and mumble to myself.

I don't know, I've always liked that the Doctor wasn't the best at what he did; that he just seemed perfect because we didn't know any better so I've never been bothered by him being bested. I mean, although he always came out on top I always felt the Master was technically the better Timelord, he had a TARDIS that could actually blend in and he always seemed to end up where he intended to be rather than occasionally screwing up the location or time like the Doctor and the Rani and Romana were likewise better.

The Master and the Rani were villains, so having them better than the Doctor meant that he has to struggle to overcome them, which is heroic. And Romana was more intelligent, but the vast majority of her knowledge was academic, meaning that she had difficulties applying it 'in the field' so to speak, which is wehere the Doctor flourished. River is just generically better than the Doctor (and everyone else) at everything. And she is not a Timelord, so there is no way she should be better at being a Timelord than the Doctor.

I've never gotten the impression River was a better scientist (with the possible exception of archaeology, obviously) than The Doctor, and she clearly relies on him for planning and improvisation.

I bet you diss women drivers too. No, I don't. But if I had millennia of experience in driving my car, I would be dubious of any Jenny (or Johnny) Come Lately who jumped into the driver's seat and claimed to understand it better than me.

He's never really seemed interested in correctly learning how to pilot the TARDIS though so the fact that he's had longer to do it doesn't really enter into.
