I just finished watching "The End of Time" - the last story of the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant). The specials at the end of his run are kind of weird. Planet of Death almost seemed like it was produced by a totally different group of people. I think maybe breaking formula by not having a regular companion accounts for the different tone. You get the idea of a Doctor losing his way. So I think the specials aren't quite as good as Tennant's regular episodes generally were, but the last 20 minutes or so of "The End of Time" really got to me.

The End of Time I think is the worst of the specials. Like you said though the last 20 minutes are good. Waters of Mars though is...AMAZING!!! "Time Lord Victorious!"

Did we ever learn what happened between Martha and her original fiance? Maybe in a comic or novel or audio or video game or live show...?

I was kind of underwhelmed by the second part of the viking story, the idea of what could go wrong with the Doctor was interesting but it wasn't allowed to linger.

Yeah, the story had ambition, but it kept shying away from it.

I've now watched New Who through Victory of the Daleks (the third episode featuring Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith). I've been pleasantly surprised so far. In my opinion, his first three episodes are significantly better than either Christopher Eccleston or David Tennant were at that point.
I had feared Smith might be the too adorable boy band Doctor. I'm glad to be wrong. He does a good job of portraying a really old guy in a young man's body. I also like how the wardrobe went in the opposite direction with the age of the actor. His suit is old-fashioned compared to Tennant's. Also, while he's generally affable, he didn't shy away from taking Amy to task in "The Beast Below" (a very excellent episode).
Based on the admittedly small sample of Amy Pond episode I've seen so far, I think Karen Gillan may do the best acting of the major New Who companions. She's not as broadly comedic as others, but I feel she does subtle, nuanced work better. Also: hot.

And she only gets better. She is most definitely hot. I just love her accent...and holy crap those legs!!!

I'm not sure we needed another Zygon story, I'd rather have brought back a villain we hadn't seen yet or another original story. That said, it wasn't bad.

Oh yeah, they're certainly not over used it's just that after their awesome showing that three Doctors special I think I just needed a bigger punch for their return.

We need some Weeping Angels and Cybermen fast...I've been twiddling my thumbs while watching most of this season so far apart from the first 2 Dalek episodes.

I have to say, this year's Who has left me cold. I like the actress who plays Clara but they ruined that character for me last year, though I'm trying to forget all that and give her a clean state this year. And I like Capaldi a lot but none of the episodes so far has caught my interest at all. The over-obtrusive background music annoys me more than ever.
