Although Worzel Gummidge came after Doctor Who. He also hosted the mystery show Whoddunit.
I think the relative fame is a matter of what your interested in. I was very aware of who Peter Davidson was when he took over the role, as my mother was huge fan of All Creatures Great and Small. I was only vaguely aware of who Peter Capaldi was, as I knew he had been in The Thick of It but would have struggled to name anything else he'd done.

When they announced Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor, I didn't recognize the name. But when I heard it mentioned that he was in Local Hero and Lair of the White Worm, I immediately knew which character he was in each.
I think he's also in a couple of episodes of Vicar of Dibley.

Are we counting John Hurt?

Are we counting John Hurt? I'm not, though if I did, he'd be at the top of the list. (Hell, I'd count him for every time I saw Ian McKellan and confused them.)

I'm not usually big on the novels but that looks too good to pass up.

Not the first time The Doctor teamed up with a Dalek hunter either. When I read that synopsis I was reminded of Abslom Daak in Nemesis of the Daleks which is one of the best comics I've read featuring the Seventh Doctor.

Are you in the UK, foxley? There's a couple of your posts now that have refered to UK television programs that I would assume are fairly obscure in the U.S. It just made me wonder.

Australia, actually. We got a lot of UK television when I was growing up.

Back at the old place, I posted this fan-made video opening for the 8th series, cause I thought it was really cool
And now the word is that the actual opening is based on this one. At least the first part, w/all the clockwork suggesting travel thru time. Then the opening reportedly shifts to space. No face on the watch, and no Seal of Rassilon.

I'd be happy with an intro like that, though I've always liked the fan intro that has the Doctor's morphing into eachother the best.

I like that they are bringing in an older Doctor. It will be a nice shakeup after years of Tennant and Smith

I'm looking forward to an older Doctor. A little more serious, a little less accessible. And I'm tired of companions falling for the Doctor; a new dynamic in the TARDIS will be nice.
It's funny. The first Doctor I watched was Tom Baker. When I found a picture in Starlog of the first 3 Doctors, my reaction was 'wow, they're so old.' Now, decades later, I'm not bothered by Capaldi's age at all. I must have matured, or something.
