Wow, ratings must really be bad in the US if no one else bothered to comment on this New Year's special after I did.

We have them on the DVR, but my wife is a bit behind in watching, so they will sit there until she gets them. I'm further behind, as I gave up trying to keep up in the latter half of the Matt Smith run, and only started catching up a short while ago, but stalled in the early Capaldi episodes again.

I didn't love it, but I thought it was head and shoulders above any of the other episodes from this season...though I guess that's faint praise. Sort of how I felt. It just so-so, but better than The Flux season. I think that was because it was more grounded and limited in scope. After a while I get annoyed by the constant stream of destruction of all the universe/reality/time followed by some impossible, limitless deus ex machina solutions. If the stakes are infinite and solutions seem to arbitrarily spring up, the theoretically enormous stakes start to feel like no stakes. Also, I feel like paradoxes, puzzles, etc. from years back had more well-defined contours. Nowadays, it seems more like the Doctor (or villains) spout out indecipherable nonsense. Instead of an interesting concept to ponder, we get the Doctor talking in circles in hopes that the audience will get worn down into thinking there's something deep in the stream of gobbledygook. The New Year's special did have a bit of those problems (like it seemed rules of the loop arbitrarily changed), but at least it felt more coherent. I was underwhelmed by the season, so I forgot about the special until a few days after it aired.

This viral rumor that Tennant will possibly return as the 14th Doctor, to aid returning show runner Russell T Davies next year, has been amusing to follow but c'mon, there's no way this is going to happen.....
....right?

Was just going to mention Tennant myself...
....some wild speculation of mine....something goes wrong with the 13th Doc's regeneration and past Doctor(s) have to help out....

While it was nice to see the Sea Devils again and the episode was fun...it didn't feel very special or consequential to me. When they did those specials that year for Tennant each one felt like a blockbuster kind of experience that made them stand out, but this felt like just an ordinary episode.

Man, I haven't watched Doctor Who in forever. My wife's the really big fan, but we both loved the David Tennant run and always enjoy going back to those along with the Sarah Jane Adventures. Tom Baker too of course. Made it through Matt Smith and early Peter Capaldi, but neither of us could take much more of the writing and haven't watched anything newer since.
Anything later that was worthwhile catching?

I was disappointed with the Capaldi Who as well. I had been excited when first hearing he was taking over because I already liked him from The Thick of It. And he himself was fine as the Doctor but as you say, the writing just wasn't there, usually. Clara was one of the best of the Companions too, potentially. I made it through the end of his time in the role but never have got round to trying the Whittaker Who. Not sure if I'll take a chance on the new guy or not: I've fallen out of the habit after all this time away.

Yeah, the writing really took a nose dive which is sad because both Capladi and Whittaker are fantastic actors. For Capaldi I really enjoyed season 9's Heaven Sent, it's not just a good episode for Capaldi...it's one of my favorite Who episodes of all time. I also really liked the season 10 two parter World Enough and Time/ Doctor falls. As for Jodi? I think she only had maybe two episodes worth re-watching: this year's new years episode Eve of the Daleks, it's a great, claustrophobic time loop episode and season 13's Village of the Angels because I love the weeping angels.
