Obviously, at least IMO, they came out better, for whatever reason, at Valiant.

Obviously, at least IMO, they came out better, for whatever reason, at Valiant. No doubt. As Shooter's first attempt at overseeing a Universe launch and the legitimate forerunner of Valiant, I've always thought the New Universe should get more respect. I think it's gained some respect in recent years, and believe it will continue to do so.

I think you're right.
I barely follow Marvel anymore, so I'm not sure, but have the New Universe characters been incorporated ?
Ellis was doing that newuniversal, which sounds really good, but that went down in flames with his computer (supposedly).

I read DP7 and Nightmask. Both were fair I guess. I remember feeling that the line was a bit juvenile, which was typical of the direction Marvel was headed by the mid-80s. Nightmask had a few nice covers by Sandy Plunkett.

Valiant worked because they started small, and had no real baggage with it (aside from Shooter's removal at Marvel). He had some seasoned pros, with BWS and Bob Layton and Don Perlin, and a young talent in David Lapham. The Gold Key characters gave it a connection to the past, without a "written in stone" history, and provided a foundation to build. They started small, with just a couple of books; then, slowly introduced more, tying them to those that came before. That allowed it to be more focused than the New Universe.

The New Universe itself was supposedly destroyed along with most of the multiverse in last year's Secret Wars event. The only known survivor is Jeff Walters AKA the Blur from DP7, who was last seen as one of the new Squadron Supreme. However, Earth 616 versions of several New Universe characters have since turned up, including a new Starbrand, Nightmask, and Troubleshooters team.

I don't read the new stuff, but I believe Star Brand joined the Avengers. He certainly appeared in their comic, in any event.

I despised Newuniversal. I love the original New Universe. Ellis mocked it, and then wrote something I hate.

Yeah, I thought Star Brand, probably the most popular of the line, was around somehow. Nightmask makes sense and is Justice somewhere as well ? The line had talent, it just felt kind of directionless. It just didn't feel like it grabbed you or have the pizzazz that Marvel 616 did.

...is Justice somewhere as well ? I don't believe so. Not in the 616 Marvel Universe, at least. There was a Justice one-shot published back in 2011, for the 25th anniversary of New Universe line, but that was something of a reboot for the character and didn't have a whole lot to do with the original series. I'm not aware of him appearing anywhere since then, but I could be wrong on that score.

As I said, Earth 616 versions of characters from the New Universe have been appearing; the Avengers' Starbrand and Nightmask are not Ken Connell and Keith Remsen, and likewise, the character Jim Tensen, currently appearing in Ultimates II as a member of the Troubleshooters, is not Justice-but he is the Earth 616 counterpart of John Tensen.

The New Universe had so many problems with creators from the beginning, it had little chance of being focused as a line.

Both Starbrand and Nightmask were Avengers, for quite some time. I don't think I would say 'quite some time'.. .it was specifically Hickman's run, which was really one big story line. After Secret Wars ended, they tried to do a 'Starbrand and Nightmask' book, which I didn't read and which sounded like one of those books where they plaster a pitch onto random existing characters.. it lasted 6-ish issues. Not sure they've been seen since.
