Objectively speaking, Magnus was probably better than anything Charlton was producing. Maybe Solar, too. Plus I enjoyed back-ups like Capt Johner and the Aliens, or Jet Dream. But the Charlton characters were more fun, somehow. Maybe because some of them were so lame?
Plus, you know - Ditko.
(Do licensed series count? Cause Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Dark Shadows might tempt me to the Gold side.)

While a (small) part of me wants to vote for Dell (the Fab Four! Neutro!), I have to go with Charlton here. Sure, Magnus and Dr Solar were cool, but Charlton had the Blue Beetle (2 of them), the Question, Son of Vulcan, Thunderbolt, the Sentinels. They had more characters, they were more traditionally super-heroic, and they were underdogs. The Charlton line got little to no respect among comic fans of the day. And I always want to side with the underdog. I'm really glad to know I'm not the only one who remembers the Sentinels. Helio, Mentalia and the Brute must be about the most underappreciated heroes in the Charlton stable (apart from maybe Ditko's Liberty Belle).  |

I positively cannot enjoy Charlton Comics. I didn't think lettering mattered to me until I tried to read Silver Age Blue Beetle. That rigid and inexpressive typed font kills me.

I'm completely unfamiliar with Quality, but Fawcett and the Marvel Family were king of the industry for most of the 1940s, and the only reason they stagnated and didn't mature into something that would carry the legacy of a Marvel or a DC today was due to DC'a underhanded legal practices. The Marvel Family of the '40s was more fun and often featured better art than its competitors. It may not have aged well, but neithwe has anyone else's output from that time period. Given a chance, Fawcett still would have been a contender today. |

I'm loathe to say it, but I don't think any publishers besides DC and Marvel had any skill or even interest in publishing superheros in the 60s. They jumped on the bandwagon because Batmania and the growth of Marvel showed the potential if something clicked. (Charlton gets a pass because they had some pretty strong creators, who showed or would show their ability on the genre--Ditko, Skeates, McLaughlin, etc.)
I don't consider Magnus or Mighty Samson superheroes--more straight adventure.
