Shaxper asked the wrong question! What EVERYONE wants to know is:
Which publisher's heroes were better in the 60's - Gold Key (Magnus & Solar) or Charlton (Capt Atom, Blue Beetle, The Question)?

Tough question.
I can't give an answer based on just the characters in the '60s. I enjoyed the early Valiant Solar and Magnus, and I adore the Denny O'Neil Question series.

As didn't start comic book collecting until early 70's i can only base my choice on what was available to me that i could find through various means. Never saw or heard of Solar at that time and on occasion find a Magnus issue here and there sporadically. For Charlton i could regularly find reprints or back issues of the Charlton comic books. So default is to Charlton for Captain Atom and Blue Beetle and Question having Magnus outgunned!

The Charlton Action Heroes, no question. Judomaster, Peacemaker, Thunderbolt...can't beat 'em!

Tower Comics. Wally Wood for the win.

While a (small) part of me wants to vote for Dell (the Fab Four! Neutro!), I have to go with Charlton here. Sure, Magnus and Dr Solar were cool, but Charlton had the Blue Beetle (2 of them), the Question, Son of Vulcan, Thunderbolt, the Sentinels. They had more characters, they were more traditionally super-heroic, and they were underdogs. The Charlton line got little to no respect among comic fans of the day. And I always want to side with the underdog.

I've never read any Gold Key comics and the only Charlton comic I like is E-Man. But since that was a '70s comic, it doesn't count for the purposes of this poll. Hell, I'm gonna vote "other" because ACG were better than Charlton. Herbie Popnecker and Forbidden Worlds for the win!

Russ Manning'a Magnus Robot Fighter was the greatest work to come out of the Silver Age (with Mighty Samson a close second) and makes this decision easy for me. It's an absolute tragedy the character has not been used well since.

I'm gonna go Ditko every time. Charlton all the way, baby!

I have read very little Gold Key from that time, but what I've read of Charlton wasn't bad.
I guess I'd agree with Shax that Heath's Magnus Robot Fighter was great, but overall linewide I think Charlton was better.
It wasn't until Valiant that I cared about those characters at all, and now I love em.

I never read any Gold Key books. I voted for Charlton and their Ditko characters.

This is why I love this forum! I started this thread as a joke to tease shaxper about his DC or Marvel thread & I still get great discussions/thoughts! You all are great...
I liked Gold Key's titles but I really liked what Valiant did with Gold Key's Big 3. I am still hoping they get back at Valiant...
However I was a fan of Charlton with their Action Heroes line & Phantom title. I also loved what DC did with the Charlton titles after Crisis. In fact I just re read the Blue Beetle series from 1986 while on vacation & still really liked it.
So for me Charlton > Gold Key.

I didn't see it as a tease at all. It's a GREAT question. I'm just sorry more folks haven't read the Gold Key stuff. You're truly missing out!
