Crooks wearing shirts and ties.
Heroes going on patrol throughout their cities at night looking for crimes.
Heroes calling each other by their hero names: "Well, hi there, Mr. Terrific, I see you and Hourman were able to make the meeting after all."
Colorful ejaculations: "Suffering shad, Aquaman!" Great Scott!"
(I know some of you thought I meant what happened when Crazy Quilt caught a glimpse of the Rainbow Raider...)

I remember a friend trying to sell me on the Ultimates by telling me Hulk ate Freddie Prince (?) in the story. I was like lol, whose that? Who is that? Freddie Prinze Jr. is the son of Freddie Prinze, who starred in the comedy Chico and the Man and died very young in 1977. He is married to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He is also the voice of Kanan in the Star Wars Rebels cartoon.

Ads featuring the characters (especially subscription ads and Hostess ads!) I like the Snickers ad they've been running in DC Comics the last couple of months.

Ads featuring the characters (especially subscription ads and Hostess ads! They've recently brought these back, though not in a good way. Marvel does multi-part ad epics.. there was one for a motorcycle company featuring the Wrecking Crew about a year back, and there's a new one with Luke Cage in it that isn't very effective because I have no memory of what the ad was for. DC is doing the 'you need a Snickers' thing with the Trinity.... Batman give Doomsday a Snickers, and it's really Wonder Woman. That one is better, but the first book I saw it in Doomsday was actually the bad guy, so it totally hurt my brain and threw me out of the story in a bad way. Editors notes are making a small comeback in Marvel... there have been a few recent books where there's a 'further reading' box on the letter column page that references what other stuff the characters are doing and/or past similar stories. I miss when you could spend 15-20 minutes reading a comic.. now, because lack of narration, thought balloon, and splashes, it's more like 10 minutes tops. Saga (which is really good) took me only about an hour to read the TRADE.

References to Places of Interests Like La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles ... I miss those references to places so much!

Crooks wearing shirts and ties. Heroes going on patrol throughout their cities at night looking for crimes. That's how Identity Crisis opens, and is always implied (or at least I always infer) that's what Supes, Bats et al are doing whenever they swoop into action from nowhere to stop something not directly related to them and/or their supporting cast.

but.. . (and yes, I get that POTUS is unique). . .LOL 3 of the previous 4 presidents were in DC comics (George W missed out because of the whole "President Luthor" thing).

That story takes place on Earth-IDGaF.

He is also the voice of Kanan in the Star Wars Rebels cartoon. I never liked him as an actor (also probably more to do with the movies he was in), but as a voice actor, I've been liking him a lot. He's also in Mass Effect (Lt. Vega) and Dragon Age (The Iron Bull).

One-and-dones.
Sure, there is the occasional stand-alone issue, but for the most part, everything is built for the trade paperback. While I understand that thinking for financial reasons, one has to invest $24 ($3.99 cover price for 6 issues) to get a story that is horribly decompressed, in the old days, we would get a complete story with start, middle, and finish in one issue, maybe two if they felt it was something worth expanding on. It makes picking up books off the cuff relatively inaccessible, because no one wants to read the middle of a story, so one has to hunt down the previous parts and then wait for thw next parts to see how it turns out.

When you think of all the done in ones that came out of DC's Brave and the Bold title, they should be ashamed of themselves.

While I understand that thinking for financial reasons, one has to invest $24 ($3.99 cover price for 6 issues) to get a story A hundred times this! A twelve cent comic (one dollar after normal inflation) had three stories. A twenty four dollar comic series has one. The difference in value is about one hundred times. Is there more in the longer story? No, because there is no synergy in the new ones, and nothing that matters. For example, I just read two Squirrel Girl trades. Those were pleasant, but the twelve page Loki story in Journey Into Mystery 85 took me longer to read (and re-read and think about). And the Loki story wa far more satisfying, because it connects to so much more: to real mythology, to future comic continuity, etc. I'm still finding new stuff in that story. So the old comics were a hundred times better. According to my calculations.
