One-and-dones. Sure, there is the occasional stand-alone issue, but for the most part, everything is built for the trade paperback. While I understand that thinking for financial reasons, one has to invest $24 ($3.99 cover price for 6 issues) to get a story that is horribly decompressed, in the old days, we would get a complete story with start, middle, and finish in one issue, maybe two if they felt it was something worth expanding on. It makes picking up books off the cuff relatively inaccessible, because no one wants to read the middle of a story, so one has to hunt down the previous parts and then wait for thw next parts to see how it turns out. Remember when comics companies could make stand alone issues without half the fans dismissing the issue as filler?

Ads featuring the characters (especially subscription ads and Hostess ads! They've recently brought these back, though not in a good way. Marvel does multi-part ad epics.. there was one for a motorcycle company featuring the Wrecking Crew about a year back, and there's a new one with Luke Cage in it that isn't very effective because I have no memory of what the ad was for. DC is doing the 'you need a Snickers' thing with the Trinity.... Batman give Doomsday a Snickers, and it's really Wonder Woman. That one is better, but the first book I saw it in Doomsday was actually the bad guy, so it totally hurt my brain and threw me out of the story in a bad way. Editors notes are making a small comeback in Marvel... there have been a few recent books where there's a 'further reading' box on the letter column page that references what other stuff the characters are doing and/or past similar stories. I miss when you could spend 15-20 minutes reading a comic.. now, because lack of narration, thought balloon, and splashes, it's more like 10 minutes tops. Saga (which is really good) took me only about an hour to read the TRADE. Does anyone else have a problem with the Snickers ad? The only woman in the ad is a raving monster that can only be cured with chocolate from the calm, benevolent men? Does that seem the least bit sexist to anyone else?

Remember when the hero was himself instead of having somebody else replacing him? And why is it that this trend to replace really only seems to happens\ to heroes? Why isn't there a replacement Lex Luthor? A replacement Magneto? Note: Doombots do not count. And it looks like DC may be trying to say there are multiple Joker's in place to explain the different characterizations? If you don't want to write a character in his own comic book then create your own! My superhero isn't replaceable with a younger, dumber, willing to work cheaper in the position like it is in the every day work force. If i want reality i wake up and go to work. In a comic book i want fun escapist fantasy giving me courage and strength to face the every day evil's in life.

Letter columns A number of Marvel's titles still have letter columns. I miss Stan's Soapbox column.

Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Grey's Jonah Hex run was done in ones, with the exception of the 3 part Jonah origin. Jimmy pushed for the done and one stories while writing the book.

Does that seem the least bit sexist to anyone else? I see what you're saying, but Snickers has done like 15 versions of the exact same commerical, covering a variety of races/creeds/sexes.. they just plug different people into the formula.

I can see that now that you point it out, but I think you may be reading too much into it...

PapaShogun: I love that Snicker's Ad so much - I downloaded the three pictures for the fun of it.
