This might be the lousiest reprint cover of a classic image in the thread. The horror... the horror...

Farrar , without a doubt, those Western reprints sported some great covers. There are quite a few more where they came from! DC did the same thing with the first two issues of the 1973 reprint Johnny Thunder. I'm pretty sure that the covers came from splash pages in the stories. Damn that gigantic trade dress! Jesus, could Toth draw...

I was haunting the spinner racks when those Johnny Thunder reprints came out but none of these covers look familiar to me.
Did DC have a Trigger Twins reprint book at this same time?

You know, I thought they did, but couldn't find anything on a quick check. They were reprinted sometimes, though, notably behind this little beauty of a cover: Found it! For some reason, it was not listed on Mike's Amazing site. That guy better get on the ball! This was the only issue, btw.

Awesome! Thanks Prince Hal.
And I like that big Johnny Thunder reprint masthead. Makes it stand out from the other wimpy logos.

Jesus, could Toth draw... That's for sure! Those are great covers, Prince Hal , thanks! You're inspiring me to look at more and more western comics (I never read these as a kid). In addition to Johnny Thunder #3/All-American Western #122 match you posted, I did notice that the other two 1973 Johnny Thunder covers are also the same as Toth's older All-American Western covers. Smart of DC to use the original covers; Toth's work looks as good in the 1970s as it did in the 1950s. It's timeless. Johnny Thunder #1 & All-American Western #121 (1951) Johnny Thunder #2 & All-American Western # 113 (1950)

RE; the Trigger Twins reprint. The GCD says editor E. Nelson Bridwell had this to say in the first issue.
Recap of Trigger Twins and Pow Wow Smith strips. Although the indicia indicates a "bi-monthly" frequency, this half-page says that "due to scheduling changes, it is only planned as a one-shot (unless it sells very well, in which case a comeback is possible)."
Makes me think this title may have been a victim of the newsprint shortage that affected several DC title at the time. But strangely, Marvel wasn't affected.

Farrar, I knew I'd seen those before! f course they were covers of other isssues! D'oh. I loved the Westerns I was able to get a hold of when I was a kid. Many were well drawn, but what always stuck out was that they were well plotted. Mysteries, adventures, human interest stories, whatever they happened to be, the writng was usually above average.

Wait wait wait -- you mean to tell me that of all the memorable scenes in #16 Gil Kane could've recreated, he chose to expand upon a two panel flashback (Clint and 'Tasha)? I can see why he (or the Marvel ptb) didn't want to recreate #16's famous cover -- it wouldn't have packed a punch, as a new line up would not have been such a surprise in 1973 -- but to make a misleading mash up of the Avengers battling the MOE along with a scene totally unconnected to it? Talk about artistic license! If I had been buying comics back in 1973 and didn't know #16's contents already, I would've felt very cheated when actually reading MTA #10 and I would have demanded my 20 cents back!

And here are the two panels I mentioned from Avengers #16. This flashback scene was unconnected to the Avengers' battle with Masters of Evil.
