Well it looks like the clear winner here is 10 years, both because it got the most votes AND because it got the endorsement of the guy who does our Classic Comics Christmas (and that counts for A LOT in my book).
So 10 years it is.
I'll be writing up a rules/guidelines post tonight and will be sure to incorporate this.

Classic is whenever you were a kid or earlier! But I think 10 years is a great compromise.

some highlights from May 2004
Walking Dead #8 Invincible #13 Ultimate Spider-Man #58 & 59 (Bendis/ Bagley really put them out fast) Superman #205 (Jim Lee drawn For Tomorrow Part 2) Superman/ Batman #10 Robin #126 (first Stephanie Brown as Robin) Kyle Baker's Plastic Man #6 Gotham Central #19 Fables #25 DC New Frontier #4 Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men #1 and somehow Chuck Austen is writing both Action and Avengers
I thought some major DC event came out at this time, but it turns out that's next month.

If things go well, and we reach a significant amount of traffic, there will come the moment, when you have to divide the forum in, at least, two sub-forums: classic and new. If you aren't using a fixed point in time, will you manually move all threads from new to classic, once they come of age?

I've thought about that too. I think for the moment it's fine, but if the site grows in popularity then a few more subforums may come in handy. This board does seem to be getting *a* *lot* more traffic than the old Classic Comics forum ever did. And I really mean 17 minutes - to me, "Classic" can/should also refer to the quality of the work. Like Chris Ware's collected, Building Stories came out last year, and it's obviously formally brilliant in a way that nothing else really is. Some books gain stature in retrospect, but some classics are obviously classics right out the gate.

I hope this board gets plenty of traffic. I would have never sought out a smaller board when I was first looking for a comic book message board a handful of years ago. I believe I just Googled "Comic book forum" and found CBR at the top of the list and joined. I eventually joined the CGC message board, because I was linked to it on CBR, and the Comics Journal board back when they had one. This place will likely grow slowly and by word of mouth rather than search results. But I hope it stays active regardless of it growing or staying this size.

Classic is whenever you were a kid or earlier! But I think 10 years is a great compromise. See....there are lots of books pre-2004 which would now qualify as being 'classic' if only by virtue of age if nothing else...including those stuffed deep in the back end of longboxes where light don't shine...like Rob Liefeld birdcage material. Can a dispensation be added if a book is less than 10 years old...such as stating WHY it's considered classic? I can think of All-Star Batman #10 which was pulled because of the printer gaffe... Of course, if a thread is set up specifically asking for books 10 years and older, that's different, as it conforms with the original poster's wishes. I'm not as invested in this issue as I used to be, simply because I no longer own a single classic comic any longer.Only my memories are classic. But I would say if theres a thread thats something like "List your favorite classic sound effect" we should all stick to the 10 year rule. In the course of a general conversation like whats your favorite artist or story, as Shax's rule #4 says there is more flexibility.I hope I got it right Now All-Star Batman #10-Do you consider it a classic because its monetarily valued as a classic due to it's scarcity?

Now All-Star Batman #10-Do you consider it a classic because its monetarily valued as a classic due to it's scarcity? Not only its scarcity after being pulled but for the reason it was pulled. We don't come across potty-mouth DCs everyday and the barred out words are still there to see. Wolverine 131 would also qualify because of the slur...which I think was overblown and stupid. We hear racial slurs on primetime TV, in movies, but if its said in a comic, it's the end of the world.

Well I think there's plenty of potty-mouthed DC Vertigos from 10 years back that gives us a good potty-mouth representation without drawing others forward.I also recall, not the specific issues but others can chime in,of books in the 70s and 80s that had hidden curse words.Even curses directed at individuals. I know there's something that Neal Adams once did

Some books gain stature in retrospect, but some classics are obviously classics right out the gate. "Quality" is integral to the definition of classic. The other ingredient is time. How much? That's what this thread is about.
