I'm an original Star Trek Fan, and I read in one book and I just can't remember which one because I read something like 10-15 books on Star Trek and Gene Roddenberry was a lady man and I read that Michelle Nichols can tell you several tales of his adoration of the women on Star Trek in the Original Series. Believe me, he was.

I noticed today while watching "The Man Trap" that there was a female crewman in a corridor shot that was actually wearing pants (The gold command uniform of Kirk, Sulu, etc.)! I love the original series and the characters but it's a bit absurd that they couldn't envision an evolution in male/female equality a bit better even in 1966. To Roddenberry's credit, he did try to do this with The Cage, but apparently a focus group wasn't buying a female (Majel Barrett as Number One) in a position of authority. Perhaps if she wore a skirt they would have been okay with it?

I watched Star Trek Into Darkness today. If someone had told me frankly how bad it was, I would have assumed they were exaggerating.

Despite that, there's at least one thread about "the hate." Whatever "hate" is directed at this movie is well deserved. I really don't see the appeal of a charmless, smug, douchebag James T. Kirk with an anger management problem. Spock is very badly written. It looks like the screenplay was assigned to the person with the least appreciation of The Original Series. Worst of all .... waaaay tooo loooong!

I haven't seen Into Darkness, but I did see the first one. I wasn't impressed and have no desire to see it again. These new Trek films are really aimed at people who aren't hardcore Star Trek fans. I understand that they want to use this IP and keep it relevant, but Trek has always been a hard sell on screen. Trek is best as a series where you can get into characterization, philosophy, world building, etc. This is starkly apparent with the Next Generation films. Next Gen is still my favorite Star Trek series, but I enjoyed those movies the least. Next Gen wasn't just an action show and that's what the movies almost always boil down to.

Maybe that was their attempt to balance the scales after 20 years.

Though a part of me can't help but wonder what Riker or Worf would have looked like in one...

Your forgot to mention that Bones found the cure for death: augment blood! There were so many stupid things in Into Darkness that the resurrection of Kirk doesn't even register on the Top Twenty Stupid Things. I was on the verge of liking it despite all the stupid stupid plot contrivances and the bad writing for Kirk and Spock. There were some exciting action sequences - I especially liked the part where Kirk and Khan were fired from the Enterprise aimed at the tiny airlock on the Federation war ship. It was very very stupid but still very exciting. And I also liked Zoe Saldana as Uhura and the guy who played Bones. But it just went on too long and in addition to being stupid and contrived and badly written, it was boring at the end. During the last twenty or thirty minutes, I frequently thought about bailing out of it and not watching the end because I was so bored. It's very rare that I get that bored watching a movie. ( The Dark Knight Rises comes to mind.) I wasn't a big fan of the first Star Trek movie with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto because it had some of the same problems as Into Darkness. (Poor Simon Pegg! Scotty is so badly written in both films.) But I was never bored with the first one. Still, Into Darkness isn't nearly as bad as The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Did anyone else see the guest starring role for Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher) on last night's Big Bang Theory? He went to the Star Wars premiere with some of the main characters. I won't spoil it, but it was funny.

Even Sheldon is apparently mature enough to understand you can like both. He also reads both Marvel and DC.

He USED to... before Disney bought Marvel... you'll note he now only wears DC t-shirts, and the don't go to the comic book store where there can be Marvel comics in the background... that kinda annoyed me.
Maybe I'm projecting too much corporate-ness into a silly sitcom, though.
