In the U.S. and Canada it's only going to be available through CBS's streaming service? Forget it. I ain't paying for another Netflix just for one show. It will remain Star Trek: Undiscovered for the time being! I said that at first but I'm going to cave, it's only six bucks a month so I'll buy it while it's on, then cancel between seasons. I think I'll just act like a cranky old fan and pretend I'm not interested!

Has anyone read Star Trek: Waypoint? I flipped through the first issue at my LCS this week and love the idea of revisiting classic characters in new stories. I didn't pick it up but plan to and apparently there are already five issues out. I had picked up the Free Comic Book Day issue of Star Trek: The Next Generation: Mirror Broken and enjoyed it as well along with Star Trek: Deviations which both feature alternate reality versions of Next Gen characters. Is anyone reading any of the new IDW series?

Waypoint has been pretty good so far. It's been nice to see various creators tell some Trek stories.

I picked up the first issue of Mirror Broken (as well as the FCBD issue) but haven't had a chance to read it yet.

A trailer was released at SDCC for the upcoming series Star Trek Discovery. It looks like the series is set after Enterprise and before the original series but also takes place in the J. J. Abrams-verse. I'm exciting to see Klingons in this.

I don't know how much of this is true, but it contains some interesting tidbits. I'm still pretty pumped about the show though.

I was rewatching the "Arena" episode of the original series as it was shown on MeTV a week or so ago and I didn't realize they were showing the recent Blu-ray special edition until the Gorn blinked and I laughed so hard I nearly choked on my drink. There's a youtube channel that shows both versions for comparison for those interested.

Miracle on 34th Street looks stupid colorized, Star Wars looks laughable CGed, and this just feels unnecessary. Much as even Next Generation's look has become dated and obsolete, it would look sillier still to attempt to update it. Let it be what it was, and allow its successes to override its shortcomings.

I completely agree. While there are some beautifully CGI painted planets during the outer space scenes in the new versions I feel it was a completely unnecessary addition. I still feel those comparison videos are interesting though and that youtube channel is full of them.

I'm not a fan of CGI because it is so fake and yet fools so many people and it's not funny when they watched the original and then they realized that CGI adds more to it. I rather watched restored shows than the CGI crap. Batman 66 shows are done masterfully and that's why I liked them so much. I agree with you 100%.

There is an DVD without the additions and the new CGI stuff and that's why I prefer the originals over the enhanced stuff that was done with CGI. Sadly, most fans prefer the shows done with the additions and the CGI stuff added in. That's way ... I have issues with CGI and knowing that the Justice League Movie coming out in November ... Cyborg is done with CGI Magic and that's makes me irritated and angry at the same time that they use this technology to make movies and fool a lot of people thinking that an actor is doing the work instead. You can see why, I'm not a fan of it ... Period.

Nowadays you can get both the original and the new ersions on bluray. The new effects must have required a lot of effort, but often a wasted one. While cleaning up the old film was a good idea, replacing models with CGI often results in things looking even more fake than in the '60s. I think on particular of the episode "the doomsday machine..." while the phaser beams do look better now, the machine itself looked far more real back then. I'm glad the originals can still be seen.

Having both versions available is great. I totally get why they did the updated CGI version though as there is a large group of the younger generation that will NOT watch anything they don't perceive as being "cool" enough to watch. Call it the MTV Generation or whatever you will but the attention span isn't there to sit through a story unless the visuals grab their interest. Then there are middle aged folk who won't watch anything older than they are. Using CGI to make a show look more current and cutting edge is one way to draw those crowds that might never watch original Trek. Plus there is the fact that much of the original Trek television films were deteriorating and becoming unwatchable over time from copying and use. The Enterprise looking green, the uniforms looking more pink and yellow than red and gold, the general fuzziness of scenes instead of the crisp and clean that new shows have with the advent of doing shows digitally.
Working with a large variety of age groups here at the hospital it constantly amazes me during any of our conversations that so many people don't "look back" in a sense. Many of the youngsters simply refuse to watch anything filmed in black and white so they will never see anything from the 60's and back. Lots of them have a "5 year window" that is if it isn't current within the last few years then they either haven't seen or heard of it. Look at what plays on syndication/rerun on most channels at the prime time zones and they are all 3-5 years old with the older shows running later at night. Only with the recent change to HD for over air channels has the growth of the retro channels been catching on and yet when at work it is only "older" people here that seem to talk about those channels and shows. Whenever I have asked or mentioned it to some of the younger ones the response is oh, yeah my parents watch those channels or yeah I don't watch those channels, I just skip over them.
More and more with so many choices people choose to watch what they like and ignore the rest. So CGI updating doesn't bother me all that much as long as there is the choice of which version I want to watch.
