I've watched several clips of Discovery on Youtube, and while it doesn't look very Star trekky, it looks like a fine show in the tradition of Honor Harrington. I look forward to the day it's on Netflix in North America!

I love the Honor series by Webber, and it definitely has that feel but it definitely feels like a Trek show too, especially towards the end of the season.

Why oh why couldn't have Tarantino done this when the original crew were all making movies? Shatner would chew up the scenery with Quentin's words...and i think DeForrest Kelly would have some choice Bone's one liners thanks to Tarantino...and Nimoy certainly would have had a field day.

It could be interesting, I've read a list of his favorite episodes and I have to say he has good taste.

Meanwhile I watched The Orville & really enjoyed it.

BBCAmerica has been airing Next Gen for some time and recently I noticed them showing both the original series and Voyager which has me wondering why no Deep Space Nine? I assume it has something to do with the rights being tied up in some capacity but really have no idea.

I finally started binge watching the fan-created web series Star Trek Continues on YouTube and was surprised by how much I am enjoying it. Not only does it thoroughly nail the visual aesthetic of the show but the scripts are also pretty well written. There's definitely a special reverence towards the source material and I really like the campy sets and costumes as well as the retro look of the practical visual effects. Initially the new cast was a bit jarring to me and admittedly it's weird seeing other actors as these iconic characters. While not all of the acting is great there are some unexpectedly strong performances. The cameos are also really impressive with both Lou Ferrigno and the sixth Doctor Who Colin Baker playing significant roles.

One of the Encore movie channels has been showing a Trek movie fest all this week, starting with The Motion(Less) Picture. It's been fun watching all the old films, most of which I haven't watched in quite some time. For all the love that Wrath of Kan receives (justly so), I think Search for Spock is an underrated gem. Lots of great character moments, a terrific Christopher Lloyd villain, and the death of the original Enterprise still hurts after all these years.
They reached the TNG films last night, of which I saw my favorite of their group, Generations. Although for me, this is where Data started going off the rails with the use of his emotion chip, I think it's fitting that Malcolm McDowell is the one who had a role in Kirk's death (and his death scene was great, very moving).

Anyone else watching The Orville? My god, I'm addicted. While the scripts aren't quite up to Trek standards, the feel/aesthetic of the series is 100% TNG, the scripts balance comedy and serious sci-fi concepts really well, a lot of veteran Trek people are involved, and I've just come to like the cast a whole lot. Sure, it's played for laughs a whole lot, but the other elements that make Trek great are all there and, if we're judging The Orville's first season against the first seasons of Next Gen and DS9, it might even be considered superior to them in its execution.
On the other hand, I haven't been able to make myself watch Discovery yet. It sounds like an extreme departure, whereas The Orville feels like a loving continuation of TNG, albeit with a crew of everymen and everywomen who make 2017 pop culture references.

I was all excited to see it listed on Amazon Prime, but it was a trick, you click on it and it says 'unavailble'

The odd films always get a bad rap but Search for Spock is my fave of the Original Series films. Nimoy got the best out of Shatner. Especially when he misses the captain’s chair and falls to the floor. Everybody always makes fun of his line delivery but he’s on point in this one.

I LOVED the Orville. It was fun...a more light hearted Star Trek. Although they tackle some social issues. I thought it was well written & very entertaining. Can't wait for Season 2.

The second half of the first season of Discovery started this week and I just found the time to catch it and found it to be a solid mid season starter. It looks like we'll be staying in the mirror universe for the remainder of the season though and I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it. If the characterizations stay strong and don't just devolve into mustache twirling I think it could be interesting but on the other side if they just go for action it could get old real fast. I will say that I do like the existence of the resistance to the Terran Empire and it looks like we may see a focus on that side of the Mirror Universe which would be different.
