Almost through season 2 (3 episodes left I think)... While I definitely like it better than season 1, it's still kinda meh overall. Too little, too late to kill off crew and think I care about them, and TIME TRAVEL. I HATE TIME TRAVEL. I think maybe if the style they started in season two was there from the start, some of the conflicts and events here would have more resonance. As it is... it's a bit hard to care.
and then they mention the 'temporal cold war', but no reference to the Suloban? It seems they just discarded 'Enterprise' (though I do recall they mentioned Archer at one point).
Nice to see them do something with Spock at least.

Was at work the other day and a girl (about 9 or 10) asked her older sister what Star Trek was, "Well, it's like Star Wars, but different"

so I finished season 2 of Discovery... what the heck did I just watch? The final two parter was, well, I'm not sure horrific is too strong. Suddenly there are one man fighters in Star Trek? and DROIDS??? Did someone forget what property they were using. Oh, and the time travel.. I HATE time travel, it it's just as annoying as usual. (I won't bother you with the still paradoxes).
The biggest thing though.. so they're going to the future to stop the scary AI, but then they take the scary AI with them? Its OK though, since they seem to have destroy it... so then, why bother go?
Those are just the BIG things. There were so many small things... the admiral (who's a psychiatrist) trying to difuse a photon torpedo... the queen-engineer-mary-sue that was worse than the worst of Wesley Crusher.. just so many thing that bordered on nonsensical, just to have an overly dramatic two part finale. Very disappointed in the end.
While I'm morbidly curious what's next, not sure I'd give it a chance it it starts bad.
Hopefully Picard is better (Library has it.. just waiting my turn!)

I've stayed away from all things Star Trek for many years, though I did watch the pilot episode of Discovery. But I might give Picard a try, and perhaps even the latest season of Discovery, now that I know Michelle Yeoh's character is in it a fair bit.

That was one of the many annoying things... what her character did in the last episode made no sense. She is pretty great though, so absent having her own shot (Which was a possibility at one point) it's good she's still around.

I'm a big fan, so that's great news. Will she be playing the same character as on Discovery?

The latest season had some especially good episodes with her, and if the rumors are true the new show has a lot to do with how she exited.

Based on the end on the 2nd season, seems odd that it could still happen... guess she makes it back to the 'present' at some point?

Based on the end on the 2nd season, seems odd that it could still happen... guess she makes it back to the 'present' at some point? You'll just have to watch season three to find out . Truth be told, while I did like the season three episodes that dealt with her, and found the device that gets her to where a spin off show could happen to be a fun Easter Egg, her exit was ultimately a little disappointing and that it took time away from the season's plot made the rest of the show feel a bit rushed. Still and all I enjoyed the third season a lot and I'm really looking forward to the fourth.

OK, so if I'm mainly interested in watching Michelle Yeoh's upcoming (hopefully) ST series, what's the minimum Discovery I can get away with? Can I limit it to just those episodes her character plays a significant part in?

Can I limit it to just those episodes her character plays a significant part in? It's kind of hard to say for sure until the show actually comes out, in my head I'd like to think that as long as you know she's the former Empress of the Terran Empire from the Mirror Universe you can just go from there, but who knows if you'll ultimately need more than that to go on.

I saw an episode of Enterprise yesterday with what was definitely a first for me... Biology that made sense!
Some DNA was found on a McGuffin at a crime scene, and because the Vulcan government has a sample of every citizen's DNA, they could identify the individual it belonged to. No doubt the guilty party! But our ever-ingenious Dr. Phlox, analyzing the sample, found that its telomeres were too long for a typical adult sample, and that it must therefore come from a baby... The DNA was not from the adult suspect, but from the government's sample! It had been planted! Drama ensued, naturally.
Now we could argue that it makes little sense for the Vulcan government to keep actual DNA from its citizens, although keeping a record of its sequence would be a very good idea. But as far as molecular biology goes, the plot twist was perfectly reasonable.
That happens, like, never... Star Trek is a world in which statements like "the white blood cells of his molecular RNA have turned to cellulose because their prion particles became radioactive" would be seen as proper science.
