Finished Season 1 of Picard... I'm not sure I liked it. It was definitely stretched out quite a bit (I think this could have been 5 or 6 episodes easily rather than 10) and it was super predictable, but overall not bad.
Is it just me, but with the small ship... the visits to bars... the warrior monk.. it sorta felt like 'what if Picard was in the Star Wars universe?' in alot of cases.
The ending (which I won't spoil) was super goofy.. there was even a literal Deux ex Machina that helped out, which I HOPE was meant to be funny, and that we never see it again. I HATED the geneticist woman (Agnes I think her name is? Awful actress imo), and the relationships the others had with Picard seemed... weird, since even though we're TOLD these are people he's been close to for 20 years, we're not really SHOWN that, so if leaves me wondering what ever happened to the rest of the Enterprise crew, other than the ones we see.
I did like the overall theme with the Androids though, and look forward to what happens next in the timeline, so that's definitely a plus. I would very much like a spin off with Troi and Riker's daughter signing up for Starfleet Academy... she was awesome.

The Rikers were easily the best part of the show, to the extent that I wish they had their own.

I've never gotten over my dislike of Riker so if that character and that actor are on the show it might be enough to keep me away from it.

Before watching the Mirror, mirror two-part episode of Enterprise, I was very worried. How in tarnation is it possible for Kirk & company to have been surprised by the existence of a mirror universe if Archer and his crew had lived through the same experience decades earlier?
Well, the writers knew what they were doing. The episodes are all set in the Mirror universe, with nobody from our reality being able to spoil the beans. Plus, they were a lot of fun, like a What if...? comic. The new intro (making it look as if the entire series was about that militaristic alternate universe) was a nice touch.
Only a few more episodes left, but all in all I admit I was wrong to judge that series so severely sight unseen. I enjoyed it a hell of a lot more than Voyager.

The episode where he thinks he's losing his mind really impressed me; it showed that the man could really act! Riker also was pretty good as a character in the later seasons and in the movies. I'd say it took a while for the producers to decide just what kind of character he was supposed to be, and what role he should play in the series. The brash young action hero role just didn't work; being the competent right-hand to the captain fit him better.

The only thing interesting about Riker in the first two seasons is the way he sits down in chairs:
I'm kidding, I liked him from the start.
But once the writing staff was able to actually start developing the characters in Season 3, he and pretty much everyone on the show got better. Especially when you consider he wasn't even much of an original character when Roddenberry created TNG. He got everything that was left over from Decker in Phase II that they didn't use in The Motion Picture.

I actually asked him about that at a con appearance a while back as it always amused me as a kid, I thought it was some way he decided to show how super masculine Riker was or something but apparently it's just because Frakes has a really bad back and doing take after take of sitting then standing up then sitting back down again would put him in agony but this way of swinging over the chair made it so he could sit down with out bending his back.

I have been a Trek fan for over 30 years and watched TNG in its original run and have re-watched most of the episodes multiple times but how have I never noticed this oddity?

It honestly looks like the kind of sit-down maneuver that a teacher would use to "rap" with at-risk teens

Amber recently encouraged me to upgrade my Star Trek library to blu ray. For around $150 (after trading in my old copies), I've got the complete TOS, TAS, Next Gen (they haven't put DS9 on blu ray yet!), and the first six films, all taking up far less space in my collection and looking better than ever. Suddenly, TOS and Next Gen look a lot less dated, and so I find myself falling in love with them all over again.
Tonight, I watched The Motion Picture for the first time in a few years, and it's glorious on blu ray. The color seems more balanced, and the visuals speak for themselves better than ever.
Btw The Motion Picture is still my favorite Trek film, and one of my favorite Trek works of all time. Despite the clear similarities to Nomad, it's the closest Trek ever comes to truly feeling on the cusp of the unknown. It reaches for something alien and new in its feel and scope, as opposed to familiar territory with Khan and Klingons. I would have changed the costumes and the lighting on the bridge, but otherwise I wouldn't change a thing.
