I have a friend who has never seen TNG (she’s seen TOS). She wants to sample an episode of TNG and isn’t bothered which one it was.
Obviously, I can’t recommend an arc-heavy episode, or one that requires much knowledge. I do feel “Encounter at Farpoint” is boring. Thinking “Justice”.
The likes of “The Measure of a Man” are good, but could one care about Data’s plight if they hadn’t yet seen him develop a little as a character?
I’ll think of something. She’ll watch it via Netflix, so can view any episode.

Fully agreed.

I’m sort of sceptical about introducing someone to an episode that is atypical. Whether it be a brainwashing or something such as Picard’s journey in “The Inner Light”, it’s a tough one. Too jarring for a first-time viewer? Maybe, maybe not.
I mean, I love Doctor Who’s “Trial of a Time Lord”, it’s one of my favourite serials, but imagine introducing a first-time DW viewer to that!
It’s a tough one.

driver1980, I'll throw out another one for consideration, "A Matter of Honor". It's a bit Riker focused as he's an exchange officer serving on a Klingon warship, but there's still some sideplot events going on on the Enterprise and you get to see the broader cast. A very entertaining episode overall, and you don't need too much background I think to jump in.

Thank you. That might be best for all the reasons you describe, but also because she’ll be familiar with the Klingons.
Incidentally, my late stepfather only ever saw TOS and the first six movies. I don’t think he had any desire to watch a show that didn’t feature Kirk!

Darmok would be a good choice. It is very Roddenberry-esque.
Q-Who, with the introduction of the Borg, is also pretty engaging (pun intended). It would also intrigue new viewers who want to know who Q is.

Today would have been Nichelle Nichols 90th birthday. Let's give a hearty huzzuh to the late great Lt. Uhura! -M

To be honest, in the pre-internet age, I doubt he knew about Relics. I probably didn’t think to inform him of it. I’m not even sure he saw Generations.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine debuted in syndication 30 years ago today, running for seven seasons: I must admit, I had a prejudice against this series when it debuted in the UK. Its predecessors had been about “to boldly go…” whereas “To boldly remain stationary on a space station…” didn’t quite appeal to me. What’s a Trek show without exploration? Didn’t feel right. (I don’t have a particular prejudice against space station premises, I enjoyed Babylon 5) But I got past my prejudices when I realized that a stationary premise could bring excitement. “To boldly stand/sit…” may not be quite as fun, but I liked that the problems of the solar system and/or galaxy were coming to Deep Space Nine. Also, consequences. As much as I like TOS and TNG, there were often not consequences or follow-ups (for instance, whatever happened to Federation/Kelvan relationships after “By Any Other Name”?). At least when something happened in DS9, there were consequences. I haven’t seen all of this, so I will resume it one day.

Still on season 2 of Enterprise. Taking a break. Binge watching older shows that were meant to be watched an episode every week doesn't work for me. Sort of like reading collections of older Silver Age comics.

I read Devil World by Gordon Eklund - a 1979 Star Trek novel. It wasn't earth shattering, but it was a nice little read. One thing, there was a computer entity in it that reminded me little of the Kree Supreme Intelligence - a computer that contained the minds of, not the greatest intellects as with the Kree, but just all the hundred remaining members of that race.

Sort of like reading collections of older Silver Age comics. Me too. My most recent episode was “Dawn” which felt very TOS-like. I enjoyed it. Are you at that stage yet?
