Just finished episode 15 of season 2. Decided to take along break to watch some other shows. Probably will start again in a few months.

Just finished episode 15 of season 2. Decided to take along break to watch some other shows. Probably will start again in a few months. What I am enjoying about Enterprise is the whole language barrier thing, whether it be Hoshi having to decipher new languages, or moments where a universal translator isn’t readily available (as was the case in “Dawn”). Adds a credibility to it. Even as a kid, it did seem peculiar how aliens - in all sci-fi movies and TV shows - had mastered English…

He's apparently been head of Star Fleet Intelligence's infamous Section 31. And he makes one hell of a cup of chamomile tea.

Youtube keeps suggesting excerpts from Star Trek Picard (because the algorithm knows I can't resist them) and while what I saw of the first three seasons was definitely underwhelming, in my humble and curmudgeonly opinion, season three looks absolutely fantastic. Too much reliance on nostalgia? I don't care!!! That scene from the episode Vox (no spoilers!) left me all choked up!
And is it a false impression or do the three seasons seem to have little to do with each other? Apart from some unavoidable continuity, it's as if there's a soft reboot in between each one or something.
That's one season I'll get on DVD as soon as it's available.

I found at least 3, if not 4, episodes of the first season to be slow, a real chore to get through. But I like what came after.

From what I've been hearing in the online communities, Seasons 1, 2, and 3 are indeed mostly unrelated. General consensus seems to be that Season 1 is pretty good, Season 2 is lousy until the finale, and Season 3 is must see. I do think I'll eventually check out Season 3, but I'll wait until the season is done to make sure this isn't just hype.

Sight unseen (apart from a few scenes shown on Youtube), I'd say that seasons 1 and 2 feature things I never asked for as a viewer, while season 3 features just what I wanted in a show about an elderly Picard. Including things I never thought I'd see, but really wanted to! Hopefully that impression won't be negated by the actual experience.

I've only seen season 1 of Picard, and I quite liked it all things considered. Mrs. MRP watched season 2 without me, but I caught bits and pieces and I can't say what I say inspired me to want to dive in to that season, so I have put it off. She's watched some of season 3 and the bits I caught have been good, and I want to see season 3, I am just considering skipping season 2 and going right to season 3.

I do think I'll eventually check out Season 3, but I'll wait until the season is done to make sure this isn't just hype. I've seen it said elsewhere that they seem unrelated as well and I can't really wrap my head around it. Maybe it's a symptom of modern shows like Game of Thrones where the whole show, although episodic and broken into seasons, is essentially a single story and the viewers expect all shows to continually build on what came before...but Star Trek was never like that. Outside of a few two part stories or reappearances of foes, the episodes and seasons of Star Trek have largely stood on their own with little more than the reoccurring cast and the tagline of "These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission(or five year mission if your prefer): to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before." to really connect things together and Picard is largely the same; it's not one long story(though each season does have one main plot) it's just a series of adventures that Picard encounters. Not that long form storytelling on TV is a bad thing, I just don't think it's an absolute necessity. As for the quality, up until the typical third act action fest that was the conclusion I really enjoyed Picard season one and I really enjoyed the plot with Q and time travel in season two...but yeah, season three is what I wanted all along: a proper send off to the Next Gen crew. About the only thing I haven't enjoyed about so far was the reveal of who was behind the bad guys and what their plan precisely was as it just feels a little too convenient and full of nonsensical techno babble but I'm hoping they stick the landing as everything else has been great.

Spent a big chunk of yesterday and today at Sferakon, the annual - and main - SF convention in Croatia. This year, two of the guests of honor were Nicole de Boer (a.k.a. Ezri Dax) and Lolita Fatjo, who worked on the production side of TNG, DS9 and Voyager for about a decade and a half mainly as script coordinator. I was honestly more interested in Fatjo, so I specifically went to a talk and Q&A she held on Saturday. ( That's her talking to a locak Trekkie just afterward) She shared quite a few interesting stories about working on Star Trek (she started during season 2 of TNG) and, I among other things, she pointed out that the writers named two characters after her: the evil collector Kivas Fajo in the third season TNG episode "The Most Toys," and the Bajoran woman Leeta in DS9. Both Fatjo and de Boer participated in a panel today (Sunday) on the 'female face' of Star Trek... ( That's the two of them in the middle) It wasn't so much about the women characters in Star Trek or the women working behind the scenes in production/writing, although it that aspect was covered, but also about how the various Star Treks affected the women who watched it - something that the Croatian women on the panel talked about (and pointed out that women seem to dominate among the Trekkies in Croatia).

I think Mae Jemison once mentioned Uhura as an inspiration. And both of them are inspirations to all of us!

Khan!!! The Musical, the off-broadway parody of Wrath of Khan, is very enjoyable. If you can get to New York in the time it has left I highly recommend it.
