There are a number of artists, writers, etc. who are regarded as greats or having put out something great. Jack Kirby, John Romita, Neal Adams...the list is endless in the comic world. But every now and then, a great produces something that is less than great. So my challenge to you is pick someone who is great and post their worst piece of work in your opinion.

Kirby did Captain Victory which was bad. But he can be forgiven because he was at the twilight of his career.

Steve Ditko's Speedball was pretty terrible. Then again, if Michelangelo had drawn Speedball, it would probably still have been pretty terrible.

Love John Byrne and love the Doom Patrol. I was really dying to get my hands on this. The art was ok, the story I don't remember much about, but the dialogue was some of the worst I'd ever read. I actually threw it down in disgust when I was done. Much as I wanted this to be good, it wasn't. and then there was this DC hyped the heck out of this and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it Chris Claremont was writing a new team of characters ! X-Men was still fairly good at this point. I remember being really impressed with Dwayne Turner's art, but the rest of it really sucked. Based on Claremont's strong track record, I think I bought the next couple of issues hoping it would get better. Epic Fail I wasn't the only one that felt that way. This has to be one of the biggest failures ever.

I remember reading one issue of Sovereign Seven... it was an awful experience. It was like a compendium of all the Claremontisms imagineable, with clichés so old they predated Gobekli Tepe, and annoying, annoying characters. The title does lend itself to the One Letter Off Comics thread, though.

No one ever talks about it
Best left ignored and forgotten
Not that I care, but I believe they eventually turned out to be written off as a cartoon or bedtime story or something
As I'm looking back, I'm shocked to find out that when one of the characters was killed off, DC pulled Power Girl into the group.
I had no idea. I was long gone at that point.
Absolutely stunned that this ran 36 issues, 2 annuals and a special.
Here's the biggest thing : These characters were owned by the creators, Claremont and Turner. Not only that, but they were even allowed to interact with the DCU a little, and they blew it.
Claremont had been booted from Marvel 4 or 5 years earlier, got this sweetheart deal, and not only fumbled, but belly flopped in the biggest way.

Was this as bad as the reviews I read? Just a rehash of what Kirby did 30 years before?

Neal Adams , Batman Odyssey was crap. I'm ashamed that I bought it.

Was this as bad as the reviews I read? Just a rehash of what Kirby did 30 years before? It's a strange amalgam of gloriously tone-deaf surrealism and that older relative (we all have one; hell, I'm pretty sure I am one) who makes you cringe when he tries to prove how hip he is. Cei-U! Yes, I own a copy!

Neil Adams , Batman Odyssey was crap. I'm ashamed that I bought it. I think I like what I've seen of the artwork, though. I might read it yet just for that.

I think that's pretty much what Neal was banking on with this series.
My understanding is it's fairly incoherent, but I think I read an article somewhere that said Neal kind of did that just because he's Neal.
It'd still sell.
I'll still buy it, but on a dirt cheap sale.
He's going to be doing a Superman mini with the New Gods characters and it sounds like he's thought it out better.
Looking forward to it.

Byrne's Spider-Man: Chapter One was the first series by Byrne that I flat out didn't like. The art, particularly in the early issues, was pretty darn good, but Spider-Man simply didn't need the Man-of-Steel treatment. Such a wrongheaded concept.

Neil Adams , Batman Odyssey was crap. I'm ashamed that I bought it. I was so stoked for that book. I think I finished the second issue (maybe 3rd?) but just couldn't go any further. I just remember how awful and crazy and chaotic the writing/story was and how unpleasant I considered the art. I remember just dropping the book down when in one scene after getting shot, batman was pulling shell casings out of his flesh. Seriously WTF?!

Neal is a brilliant artist, but he's simply not a good writer. Until he drops the egoism and teams up with a good writer that compliments his style, I won't be buying any of his new stuff.
