excerpts from thread about the new CBR:
Maybe we could have a review thread here for new comics that anyone could contribute to?
I think maybe we could review new books one week after they come out to avoid spoilers & give a more detailed review than a brief summary. We can do it informally & if it became cumbersome maybe one of the moderators (or even a new moderator) could monitor it.
My one thought is that if you are going to do a review section/thread, the reviewers would have to agree on a common scale (letter grades, x out 5 stars, x out of 10 or whatever) if not a common rubric for evaluating books to give it some context and compatibility between reviews. Having separate review threads for classic books that reflect the character and preferences of the reviewer is one thing, but if it is intended as a common review thread, there should be some commonality between the reviews, especially if multiple posters review the same book.
That is why I am trying to feel out if anyone is interested. It should be several posters to hit the different publishers. For example my pull list right now is heavy on DC & Archie so someone else would have to cover Marvel & Valiant & Image & others. Then we could set up these sort of standards before starting the reviews

I'd read. And I might be willing to sporadically do reviews for trades if that was something that people would be interested in. But I'm 155 miles away from a comic book shop and haven't bought a new floppy since 1999.

Well, I could help cover DC & Marvel. I read some indy titles but not enough I think to qualify for covering say, Image or Dark Horse.

I'd read and maybe comment on the reviews or books, but I've found over the years here and in our previous home that for me, writing reviews becomes a chore and sucks some of the fun out of comics for myself. I may randomly post some impressions here or there, but writing full blown reviews of anything isn't something I want to do any more.

I'd read from time to time but probably wouldn't contribute since I only buy trades nowadays.

I already review new books for another site, so if I got permission from the guy over there, I might be able to post those reviews here as well. My pull list skews heavily Marvel, but I only do 1, maybe 2, per week. The books I usually review are:
Moon Knight Doctor Strange Captain America: Steve Rogers Darth Vader (ending after next issue)
I also read Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain America: Sam Wilson, Mockingbird, and Star Wars, and I have reviewed each of them at some point in the past.

I'm reading quite a lot of Image these days, both in singles and in trades, but I'm notoriously unreliable.

I'd personally never look at it but I'm certainly not opposed to the idea.
Cei-U! I summon the thumbs up!

I'd contribute, I mostly read DC with a few Dark Horse books thrown in.

I will try to do a sample review on Titans Rebirth #1. Please critique it & offer suggestions on how to make it better so we can fine tune a standard format for reviews.

As for the rating system, I kinda like what the reviewers do over at the Superman Homepage. They separate their individual reviews into Story, Art, and Cover, giving each section a rating of X out of 5. Separating the components in such a way may be beneficial since I think it's safe to say that each of us judge a comic on different elements. For example, one of us may like an issue's story better while another reviewer may like the art of the same issue more than the story. It may offer a more comprehensive review of the overall product. I do think it's important to note whether or not, based on this current issue, we'd be willing to buy the next issue. I feel a review needs to be objective as possible and not just serve as consideration for those who buy this singular title to continue an unbroken run regardless of the title's current quality.

IRT the rating system, because of Comic Book Roundup's requirements, I do a "X out of 10" scale, so keeping with that would be easier for me.
That said, I like String's suggestion about using a "X out of 5" for those various components of each book. I'm certainly more of a Story guy, so my reviews tend to lean heavily toward the writing, the pace and the flow of the stories, with typically only a cursory "like/dislike" given in regard to the art, as I have little artistic talent (I'm so lacking in that area, I draw fat stick figures).

Titans Rebirth #1 (DC)Cover By Brett Booth & Norm Rapmund. Script by Dan Abnett. Art by Booth & Rapmund. Out of all the books after DC Rebirth Special it looks like this will be an important title. It features the "star" of DC Rebirth - Wally West the former Kid Flash/Flash. DC must have a lot of faith in Abnett to have him write the book that may unravel the mystery behind the missing years of our heroes. The book is pretty standard for a rebirth title. It bridges the past while setting up a new direction for the ongoing title. It is interesting that DC chose this incarnation of the Titans as the most iconic as opposed to the Wolfman/Perez era which was the most popular. The story basically follows Wally in his new Flash costume (too much red) as he attempts to reconnect with his old friends (who no longer remember him). The story alternates between past memories with each member before he reawakens their memories of him with the speedforce. Robin/Nightwing. Speedy/Arsenal. Aqualad/Tempest. Lilith/Omen. Donna Troy. With their memories reactivated they assume Mr Twister from the Titans: Hunt mini series is behind the altered memories. Wally thinks it is bigger than that & the Titans are back together. Script: I think Abnett did a good job giving us glimpses of their past & setting up a new "mission". He also showed why they are different from other teams because of their friendships. He had a good balance of action with relationship building scenes. 4/5.Art: Booth is one of those artist that everyone either loves or hates. I happen to love his art. I think it is dynamic. It is very stylized but he shows emotion well IMO. I think he is a good fit on this title. I have mixed feelings on some of the updated costumes. 4/5.Overall: I liked the issue enough to buy Titans #1. I think it is one of the better titles in DC Rebirth. 8/10.
