The new Classics board seems so barren.... It's frankly very depressing. Not surprising. It's my understanding that most users are actually here. Other sub-forums have also suffered even though there's no real alternative around the web. Case in point, Spider-Man, where one of the regulars is already complaining about it: "I know it's only a few days but things here seem not only very sanitized but very quiet….almost like a morgue. And this is coming from a long-time poster that didn't engage in many snarkfests, let alone arguments. I hope to see more of the "old crowd" back here and some healthy discussions again because, right now, this is dullsville." Wish he were here, so we could start some arachnid discussions.

Thanks for this. I clearly remember that Sir Tim was running the board when I joined in 2006 and, at one point, it was suddenly LR instead. I don't recall an explanation nor introduction, but it might have happened at a point where I wasn't posting much. So, the early history of this community -- how did it start? Who was there first? What brought them there? If you mean the Classics Board specifically it's been around since at least the 2004 CBR crash/reboot and I'm pretty sure for quite a while before that. It had its roots in the old Continuity Board on the first post-KC CBR. Many of its regulars (including yours truly) found a new home on the Classics Board after Continuity went bye-bye (our bunch is far more civil than the Continuity gang tended to be, I should note). Not sure if it was already up and running when I returned from exile in '99 or if I was here from the beginning. The earliest moderator I recall was Jonathan Bogart (aka Goldenager), followed by Aaron Kashtan (Sir Tim Drake), Scott Mahaffey (Lone Ranger) and Yerself. Cei-U! I summon the Readers Digest version! Exactly the history I was looking for. Thanks! So who else was there from the (semi) beginning that's still around today?

I saw that post. The old Spider-man boards were a lot more interesting than what's been left in the wake of the CBR reboot.

I joined some time in 1997 I think. Still the old Continuity board there at that time.

I joined CBR Classics about the same time as Shaxper in 2006, and of the early Classic regulars which I recall as already already "up and at it" there was/is:
Cei-U Dan B. Slam Bradley Red Oak Kid Lone Ranger Infobroker TGuy Cherokee Jack Zilch Roquefort Raider MW Gallaher Bill Angus berk MDG Kan-Man Mike Kuypers Aaron King Aaron Kashton Spoon Jenkins Scratchie Graham Vingoe (?) Michiko S.
There are also great posters like Chris N., Foxley and Jolly Mon who I think were here before me, but I'm not certain
Some of those guys have sort of retired from the board now, and I know I am forgetting others (forgive me others, and chime in)

It was called Classics Comics when I came on board in the early fall of 2003. Spent the first few weeks reading all the older posts, some of which went back a couple of years (at least). I resurrected a lot of discussion and a lot of questions. I was especially drawn to and enjoyed Kimosabe's Guess the Classic Cover Thread. Cei-U! had already retired himself (since he was dominating the wins) and for quite awhile ROK and I were in a healthy competition for first place. After another while I volunteered to keep and post the tallies, complete with colorful scoreboards, and I too became more of an onlooker. Kimosabe had another moniker as Kid Flash but when the boards crashed (server upgrade in May of 1994), he snagged the Lone Ranger handle. We lost all of the old posts and started over then as well. I was sorry then for all the history that was gone. I am equally sorry that posts on CBD from 2004 - 2007 or so are gone too, and we will be loosing all of it in just a few days. But the forum stuff I most enjoyed, came from sharing comic history with other very knowledgeable posters. I use to a heavy poster, but by 2010 my input dwindled down to near zero due to other life activities consuming my time. Job responsibilities picked up, family life took on extra time (in a very good way), and Facebook also intervened as my main stage for online expression. I was also (and continue) spending a lot of time at www.Herocopia.com, "Your Super-hero Information Source for Astro City." So yea, my involvement with CBR dwindled to that of a viewer and very occasional poster. Except for monitoring and commenting in Astro City related threads, I stayed pretty much in the Classic Comics Forum exclusively. My current burst of input here is in the interest of maintaining some of that history and entertainment provided in the past and to stay in contact with my favorite bunch of online comic peoples. I fear the burst has about a week or two before I am forced to pull it back for a few months. I am in the middle of (yet another) education boot camp. That will destroy and consume almost all of my free time. But for now it is nice to kick the tires and discuss comics in depth for awhile. -jb the extremely busy ib -

You know,I'm one of the oldest in this crowd, about to turn 60, but was very late in joining up with CBR. Reading about the history from you "old-timers" makes me feel young. Carry on tribal elders

The Red Oak Kid was a demi-god at the GCC, and it was only when he was "resting" it seems did I manage to score a victory on that esteemed game. I remember my first win was for Amazing Spider-Man #18. That 'ole tin can sitting next to a cowering Spider-Man did it for me. A rare time I got a Silver Age Marvel before you, although you were likely retired. I remember another GCC ace we haven't heard from for a while, and needs to be added to my above list, is extremely knowledgeable and super nice guy Michiko. Haven't heard from him in ages.

We probably started around the same time. I was September of 2006. I didn't really get to the classics board until December of '06 though, when Lone Ranger sent me a private message suggesting I participate in the Classics Comics Christmas. It's funny because I had assumed you had been there much longer than me. You seemed to be a mainstay from before I was around. I took you as one of those people who had been there forever.

If you have, could you maybe point me to it. If not, maybe a thread? Many Christmases ago, the dread tyrant Cei-U! charged us to come with our favorite writer/artist pairs. And you went with a stretching-the-rules choice of Kurt Busiek and Scott McCloud and promised a discussion enlightening the effect to which their friendship has influenced each others careers. But then you got busy with life and things and didn't finish filling out the Christmas entries. That's my vague recollection of years back. I have waited eagerly ever since to be regaled with tales of Busiek and McCloud. I've read what each has to say in introductions to various collections of each others' work, but you seem like a guy who knows more detail. And I would love to hear your take on the topic.

I feel like I've been around forever, but I think my first post was in May 2006, so I guess I'm sort of second generation, following the First Meltdown. In real life of course I feel like just another old dude.

I've been around since before 2000 under various guises. I was "The Filth" before the Morrison mini came out. I mostly commented on Vertigo, mature readers, '80s independents, and Avengers books back in the day. (I had a full run of Avengers, v 1 from issue 85 and a complete run of WCA/A:WC. I gave up when Bendis rebooted the franchise. Yes, I owned Heroes Reborn in full, but it was Chuck Austen that finally ran me off the title.)

I remember a reset of posts around 2006 ? But it might hAve been a maintenance issue. That was probably the result of archiving old threads that hadn't been active to keep the database and therefore speed of the site up. Anyway my personal history: joined the electricferret boards around '97 and they got merged with CBR in 2001.

You guys would identify a cover from 1953 after seeing, like, the top right corner of its indicia!!!
